1•1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. •2He was in the beginning with God; •3all things were made through him, and apart from him not even one thing was made that has been made. •4In him was life,¹ and the life was the light of men. •5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.²

•6There was a man sent from God, whose name [was] John. •7He came for testimony, to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him. •8He was not that light, but [came] to testify about the light.

•9The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world.³ •10He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and [yet] the world did not know him. •11He came to [his] own [home], and [his] own [people] did not receive him. •12But as many as did receive him, he gave them the right to become children of God; that is, to those who believe in his name, •13who were born, not of blood nor or the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

•14And the Word became flesh and encamped among us (and we looked at his glory, glory as of the only unique One from the Father), full of grace and truth. •15John testified* about him, and cried out, saying, "This was [he] of whom I said, 'The⁴ One who comes after me ranks before me, because he was [in existence] ahead of me.'" •16Because from his fullness we have all received, that is, grace upon grace. •17Because the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. •18No one has ever seen God; the only unique God,⁵ who is in the bosom of the Father, he has described [him].

•19And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" •20And he confessed, and did not deny; and he confessed,

"I am not the Christ." •21And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" And he said*, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" And he answered, "No." •22Therefore they said to him, "Who are you? [Tell us] so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" •23He said, "I [am] the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,'⁶ just as the prophet Isaiah said." •24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. •25And they asked him and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing,⁷ if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" •26John answered them, saying, "I am baptizing⁷ in water; [but] among ^†you stands One who ^†you do not know, •27the One who is coming after me,⁸ the strap of whose shoe I am not worthy to unloose." •28These things happened in Bethany⁹ on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.⁷

•29The next day he saw* Jesus coming toward him, and said*, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! •30This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was [in existence] ahead of me.' •31And I did not know him; but so that he might be made apparent to Israel, for this [reason] I came baptizing in water." •32And John testified, saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. •33And I did not know him; but the One who sent me to be baptizing⁷ in water—he said to me, 'On whomever you see the Spirit descending and remaining,¹⁰ this is the One who baptizes⁷ in the Holy Spirit.' •34And I have seen and have testified that this is the Son¹¹ of God."

•35Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples; •36and looking at Jesus as he walked, he said*, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" •37And the two disciples heard him speak [this], and they followed Jesus. •38Now Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said* to them, "What are

^†you seeking?" And they said to him, "Rabbi" (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), "where are you staying?" •39He said* to them, "Come and ^†you will see." Therefore they came and saw where he was staying; and they stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour. •40One of the two who heard [this] from John, and followed Jesus,¹² was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. •41He first¹³ found* [his] own brother Simon, and said* to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which means, when translated, Christ). •42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, "You are Simon the son of John;¹⁴) you shall be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter¹⁵).

•43The next day [Jesus] wished to go to Galilee, and [so] he found* Philip. And Jesus said* to him, "Start following me." •44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. •45Philip found* Nathanael, and said* to him, "We have found the One of whom Moses in the law and [also] the prophets wrote, Jesus from Nazareth, the son of Joseph." •46And Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said* to him, "Come and see." •47Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said* about him, "Behold, a true Israelite, in whom is no deceit!" •48Nathanael said* to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." •49Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" •50Jesus answered and said to him, "Because I said to you, I saw you underneath the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these." •51And he said* to him, "Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, ^†you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of man."

2•1And on the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. •2And Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the marriage. •3And when the wine was gone, the mother of Jesus said* to him, "They have no wine." •4And Jesus said* to her, "[O] woman, what have I to do with you? My hour has not yet come." •5His mother said* to the

servants, "Whatever he says to ^†you, do [it]." •6Now six stone water-jars were sitting there, for the [ceremonial] purification of the Jews, containing two or three [ten-gallon] measures¹ apiece. •7Jesus said* to them, "Fill the water-jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. •8He said* to them, "Now draw [some] out, and carry it to the ruler of the feast." And [so] they carried [it to him]. •9And when the ruler of the feast tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it was from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the ruler of the feast called* the bridegroom •10and said* to him, "Every man sets out the good wine first; and whenever [people] have drunk freely, [then] the inferior; [but] you have kept the good wine until now." •11This beginning of [his] signs, Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and made his glory apparent; and his disciples believed in him.

•12After this he went down to Capernaum, he and his mother and [his] brothers and his disciples; and there they stayed not many days.

•13And the Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. •14And he found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the coin-changers sitting [at their tables]. •15And making a lash out of cords, he drove [them] all out of the temple, both the sheep and oxen; and he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned [their] tables. •16And he said to those who sold the doves, "Take these things out of here; quit making my Father's house a house of merchandise." •17His disciples remembered that it is written, "Zeal for your house will consume me."² •18Therefore the Jews answered and said to him, "What sign do you show us, since you are doing these things?" •19Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." •20Then the Jews said, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple,³ and you will raise it up in three days?" •21But he was speaking about the temple of his body. •22When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word which Jesus had said.

John 2

•23Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs which he was doing; •24but Jesus himself was not trusting himself to them, because he knew all [men], •25and because he had no need for anyone to testify about man; for he himself knew what was in man.

3•1Now there was a man of the Pharisees, whose name [was] Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. •2This [man] came to Jesus¹ by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you have come from God [as] a teacher; for no one can be doing these signs that you are doing, unless God is with him." •3Jesus answered and said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born from above,² he cannot see the kingdom of God." •4Nicodemus said* to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born, [can he]?" •5Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. •6That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit.³ •7Do not marvel that I said to you, '^†You have to be born from above.'² •8The wind³ blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from and where it goes; everyone who has been born of the Spirit is like this." •9Nicodemus answered and said to him, "How can these things be?" •10Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and [yet] you do not know these things? •11Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and testify of what we have seen; and [yet] ^†you do not receive our testimony. •12If I have told ^†you earthly things and ^†you do not believe, how will ^†you believe if I tell ^†you heavenly things? •13And no one has ascended into heaven except the One who descended from heaven, [that is], the Son of man.⁴ •14And just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of man has to be lifted up, •15so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.⁵

John 3

•16"For God so loved the world that he gave [his] only unique Son, so that whoever believes in him would not perish but have eternal life. •17For God did not send the Son into the world so that he might condemn the world, but so that the world might be saved through him. •18The one who believes in him is not condemned; the one who does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only unique Son of God. •19And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil. •20For everyone who practices bad deeds hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. •21But the one who does the truth comes to the light, so that it may be made apparent that his works have been worked in God."

•22After this Jesus and his disciples went into the land of Judea; and there he was staying with them and baptizing.⁶ •23And John also was baptizing⁶ in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and [people] were coming and being baptized.⁶ •24For John had not yet been thrown into jail.

•25Therefore there arose among John's disciples a controversy with a Jew⁷ about purifying. •26And they came to John, and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you on the other side of the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, he is baptizing⁶ and all are going to him." •27John answered and said, "A man cannot receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven. •28^†You ^†yourselves testify about me that I said, I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him. •29The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices with [great] joy because of the bridegroom's voice; therefore this joy of mine has been made full. •30He has to be increasing, but I [must] be decreasing."⁸

•31The One who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth is from the earth, and speaks from the earth. The One who comes from heaven is above all. •32What he has seen and heard, this he testifies to,⁹ and [yet] no one receives his testimony; •33the one who does receive

John 3

his testimony has certified with his seal that God is true. •34For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he¹⁰ does not give the Spirit by measure. •35The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. •36The one who believes in the Son has eternal life; and the one who is disobeying the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

4•1Therefore, when Jesus¹ knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John •2(although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples [were]), •3he left Judea and departed again to Galilee. •4Now it was necessary for him to pass through Samaria. •5So he came* to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. •6Now Jacob's well was there; therefore, being tired from the journey, Jesus started just sitting at the well. It was about the sixth hour.

•7There came* a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said* to her, "Give me [something] to drink." •8For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. •9Therefore, the Samaritan woman said* to him, "How [is it] that you, since you are a Jew, are asking for [something] to drink from me, since I am a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.² •10Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me [something] to drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." •11The woman³ said* to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well shaft is deep; from where then do you get that living water? •12You are not greater than our father Jacob, [are you], who gave us the well shaft, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his livestock?" •13Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, •14but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water bubbling up to eternal life." •15The woman said* to him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor keep coming here to draw."

John 4

•16[Jesus] said* to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." •17The woman answered and said to him,⁴ "I have no husband." Jesus said* to her, "You have well said, 'I have no husband'; •18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you said truly." •19The woman said* to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. •20Our fathers worshiped in this mountain; and ^†you say that in Jerusalem is the place where it is necessary to worship." •21Jesus said* to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will ^†you worship the Father. •22^†You worship what ^†you do not know; we worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews. •23But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for indeed the Father seeks such to worship him. •24God [is] spirit, and those who worship him have to worship in spirit and truth." •25The woman said* to him, "I know that Messiah is coming (the One who is called Christ): whenever he comes, he will disclose all things to us." •26Jesus said* to her, "I who speak to you am [he]."

•27And at this [point] his disciples came. And they were marveling that he was talking with a woman, but none said, "What are you seeking?" or, "Why are you talking with her?" •28Then the woman left her water-jar, and went away into the city, and said* to the men,⁵ •29"Come, see a man who told me all that I have done. This is not the Christ, [is it]? •30They went out of the city and were coming to him.

•31In the meantime the disciples were making request of him, saying, "Rabbi, eat." •32But he said to them, "I have food to eat of which ^†you do not know." •33Therefore the disciples were saying to one another, "Someone has not brought him [something] to eat, [have they]?" •34Jesus said* to them, "My food is to be doing the will of the One who sent me, and to accomplish his work. •35Do ^†you not say, 'There are yet four months, and [then] the harvest comes'? Behold, I say to ^†you, lift up ^†your eyes, and look at the fields, because they are already white for harvest. •36The one⁶ who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps may rejoice together. •37For in this the saying is true, 'One sows and another reaps.' •38I sent ^†you to reap that for which ^†you have not labored; others have labored, and ^†you have entered into their labor."

John 4

•39Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all that I have done." •40Therefore when the Samaritans came to him, they started requesting him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. •41And many more believed because of his word. •42And they were saying to the woman, "We believe, [and it is] no longer [just] because of your talk, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world."⁷

•43Now after the two days he departed from there to Galilee. •44For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in [his] own homeland. •45Then when he came to Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast, for they also had gone to the feast.

•46Then he came again to Cana of Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son was sick in Capernaum. •47When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and started requesting that he would come down and heal his son, for he was about to die. •48Therefore Jesus said to him, "Unless ^†you see signs and wonders ^†you will not believe." •49The royal official said* to him, "Sir,⁸ come down before my child dies." •50Jesus said* to him, "Go; your son lives." The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started going [home]. •51And already, as he was going down, [his] slaves met him, saying that his boy was living. •52Then he inquired from them the hour in which he got better, [and] then they said to him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him." •53Then the father knew that [it was] that [same] hour in which Jesus had said to him, "Your son lives"; and he himself believed, and [so did] his whole household. •54This [was] now the second sign [that] Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.

5•1After this there was a feast¹ of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. •2Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep [Gate] a pool, which in

Hebrew is called Beth-zatha,² which has five colonnades. •3In these were lying a multitude of those who were sick, blind, crippled, withered.³ •5And a certain man was there, who had had his sickness for thirty-eight years. •6When Jesus saw him lying [there] and knew that he had already been a long time [in that situation], he said* to him, "Do you want to be healed?" •7The sick [man] answered him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool whenever the water is troubled, and while I am going another steps down before me." •8Jesus said* to him, "Rise, take up your pallet, and start walking." •9And immediately the man became healthy, and he took up his pallet and started walking.

Now that day was the sabbath. •10Therefore the Jews started saying to the man who had been cured, "It is the sabbath, and it is not permissible for you to take up [your] pallet." •11But he answered them, "The one who made me healthy—he said to me, 'Take up your pallet, and start walking.'" •12They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up [your pallet], and start walking'?" •13Now the [man] who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. •14After this, Jesus found* him in the temple, and said to him, "Behold, you have become healthy! Quit sinning any more, lest something worse happens to you." •15The man went away and reported to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him healthy. •16And for this [reason] the Jews started persecuting Jesus,⁴ because he was doing these things on the sabbath. •17But Jesus answered them, "My Father is working right up until now, and I am working." •18Therefore, for this [reason] the Jews were seeking [all the] more to kill him, because he not only was breaking the sabbath but also was saying that God [was his] own Father, making himself equal with God.

•19Then Jesus answered and started saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever he does, these

John 5

•25"Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. •26For as the Father has life in himself, so also he has given to the Son to have life in himself; •27and he has given him authority to pass judgment, because he is the Son⁵ of man. •28Do not be marveling at this; because the hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice •29and come out, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, [and] those who have practiced bad deeds, to the resurrection of judgment.

•30"I can do nothing of my own accord; just as I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just, because I am not seeking my [own] will but the will of the One who sent me.

•31"If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true; •32there is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony which he testifies about me is true. •33^†You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. •34Now I do not receive [this] testimony from man; but I am saying these things so that ^†you might be saved. •35He was a burning and shining lamp, and ^†you were willing to be overjoyed for a [brief] hour in his light. •36But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has given me so that I may accomplish them, the very works which I am doing, testify about me that the Father has sent me. •37And the Father who sent me—he has testified about me. ^†You have neither ever heard his voice, nor seen his shape. •38And ^†you do not have his word abiding in ^†you, because ^†you do not believe him whom he has sent. •39^†You search the scriptures, because ^†you think that in them ^†you have eternal life; and they are what testify about me. •40And [yet] ^†you are not willing to come to me so that ^†you may have life. •41I do

John 5

not receive glory from men. •42But I have come to know ^†you, that ^†you do not have the love of God in ^†yourselves. •43I have come in my Father's name, and ^†you do not receive me; if another comes in [his] own name, ^†you will receive him. •44How can ^†you believe, who receive glory from one another and [yet] ^†you do not seek the glory that [comes] from the only God?⁶ •45Do not be thinking that I shall accuse ^†you to the Father; the one who accuses ^†you is Moses, in whom ^†you have hoped. •46For if ^†you believed Moses, ^†you would believe me, for he wrote about me. •47But if ^†you do not believe his writings, how will ^†you believe my words?"

6•1After these things Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is [the Sea] of Tiberias. •2And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs which he was doing on those who were sick. •3And Jesus went up onto the mountain, and there sat down with his disciples. •4Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. •5Therefore when Jesus lifted up [his] eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said* to Philip, "How might we buy bread, so that these [people] may eat?" •6Now he was saying this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. •7Philip answered him, "Two hundred denarii's¹ [worth] of bread is not enough for them, so that each may get a little." •8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said* to him, •9"There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are they among so many?" •10Jesus said, "Make the people² sit down." Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. •11Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; likewise also from the fish, as much as they wished. •12And when they had eaten their fill, he said* to his disciples, "Gather up the broken pieces left over, that not anything may be lost." •13Therefore they gathered [them] up and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves, which were left over by those who had eaten. •14Then when the people² saw the sign³ which he had done, they started saying, "This is truly the prophet who is to come into the world!"

John 6

•15Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take him away [by force] to make him king, he withdrew again onto the mountain alone by himself.

•16Now when evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, •17and getting into a boat, they started going to the other side of the sea to Capernaum. And it had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. •18And the sea was becoming aroused since a great wind was blowing. •19Therefore when they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia,⁴ they saw* Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were afraid. •20But he said* to them, "It is I; quit being afraid." •21Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

•22On the next day the crowd who stood on the other side of the sea saw that there had been no other small boats there, except for the one,⁵ and that Jesus had not entered into the boat with his disciples, but [that] his disciples had gone away alone. •23Other small boats⁶ from Tiberias came near the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks.⁷ •24Therefore when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor [were] his disciples, they themselves got into the small boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

•25And when they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?" •26Jesus answered them and said, "Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, ^†you seek me, not because ^†you saw signs, but because ^†you ate of the loaves and were satisfied. •27Do not be working for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to ^†you; for him God the Father has sealed." •28Then they said to him, "What may we do so that we may be working the works of God?" •29Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work

John 6

of God, that ^†you keep believing in him whom he has sent." •30Therefore they said to him, "Then what sign do you do, so that we may see, and believe you? What miracle do you work? •31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; just as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"⁸ •32Then Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, [it is] not Moses [who] has given ^†you the bread from heaven; but my Father gives ^†you the true bread from heaven. •33For the bread of God is the One who comes down from heaven, and gives life to the world."

•34Then they said to him, "Lord, always give us this bread." •35Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; the one who comes to me shall not hunger, and the one who believes in me shall never thirst. •36But I said to ^†you that ^†you have seen me⁹ and [yet] do not believe. •37All that the Father gives me will come to me; and the one who comes to me I shall not throw outside. •38Because I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of the One who sent me. •39And this is the will of the One who sent me, that of all that he has given me I should lose none of it, but raise it up in the last day. •40For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him might have eternal life; and I will raise him up in the last day."

•41Then the Jews started grumbling about him, because he said, "I am the bread which came down from heaven." •42And they were saying, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" •43Jesus answered and said to them, "Quit grumbling to one another. •44No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up in the last day. •45It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.'¹⁰ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. •46Not that anyone has seen the Father except the One who is from God; he has seen the Father. •47Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, the one who believes¹¹ has eternal life. •48I am the bread of life. •49^†Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. •50This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. •51I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and indeed the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh."

John 6

•52Therefore the Jews were fighting with one another, saying, "How can this [man] give us his flesh to eat?" •53Then Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, unless ^†you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, ^†you have no life in ^†you. •54The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. •55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. •56The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. •57Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so the one who eats me—indeed he will live because of me. •58This is the bread which came down from heaven, not as the fathers ate¹² and died; the one who eats this bread will live forever." •59He said these things in the synagogue, as he was teaching in Capernaum.

•60Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard [this], said, "This is a hard saying; who can keep hearing it?" •61But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, "Does this ensnare ^†you [in sin]? •62Then [what] if ^†you should observe the Son of man ascending where he was before? •63It is the spirit that makes alive, the flesh does not profit anything. The words that I have spoken to ^†you are spirit and are life. •64But there are some of ^†you who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were that did not believe¹³, and who it was that would betray him. •65And he continued saying, "For this reason I have said to ^†you that no one can come to me unless it is given him [to do so] by the Father."

•66From this [time on] many of his disciples drew back and were no longer going around with him. •67Then Jesus said to the twelve, "^†You do not also wish to go away, [do ^†you]?" •68Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; •69and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God."¹⁴ •70Jesus answered them, "Did I not choose ^†you, the twelve, and one of ^†you is a devil?" •71Now he was speaking of Judas [the son] of Simon Iscariot,¹⁵ for he was going to betray him, [and he was] one of the twelve.

7•1And after these things Jesus started going around in Galilee; for he was not willing¹ to be going around in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. •2Now the Jews' feast of Tabernacles was near. •3Therefore his brothers said to him, "Move on from here and go to Judea, so

that your disciples may see your works that you are doing. •4For no one does anything in secret [when] indeed he himself is seeking² to be [known] openly. If you are doing these things, make yourself apparent to the world." •5For not even his brothers were believing in him. •6Then Jesus said* to them, "My time has not yet come, but ^†your time is always ready. •7The world cannot hate ^†you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. •8^†You go to the feast; I am not³ going up to this feast, because my time has not yet fully come." •9Now when he had said these things, he remained in Galilee.

•10But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but as [it were]⁴ in secret. •11Therefore the Jews were seeking for him at the feast, and saying, "Where is he?" •12And there was much muttering about him among the crowds. Some were saying, "He is a good man," but others were saying, "No, rather he is leading the crowd astray." •13However, no one was speaking openly about him for fear of the Jews.

•14Now when it was already the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and started teaching. •15Therefore the Jews were marveling, saying, "How does this [man] know learning,⁵ when he has not studied?" •16Then Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me; •17if anyone wishes to keep doing his will, he will know about this teaching, whether it is from God or [whether] I am speaking of my own accord. •18The one who speaks of his own accord is seeking [his] own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of the one who sent him—he is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him. •19Did not Moses give ^†you the law? And [yet] none of ^†you does the law. Why are ^†you seeking to kill me?" •20The crowd answered, "You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?" •21Jesus answered and said to them, "I did one work, and ^†you all marvel. •22For this [reason] Moses⁶ has given ^†you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and ^†you circumcise a man on the sabbath. •23If on the sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are ^†you mad at me because I made a man's whole [body] healthy on the sabbath? •24Do not be judging according to appearances, but be judging with right judgment."

John 7

•25Then some of the residents of Jerusalem started saying, "Is not this the one whom they are seeking to kill? •26And behold, he is speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! The rulers do not perhaps really know that this is the Christ, [do they]? •27Yet we know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from." •28Therefore Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, "^†You both know me, and know where I am from! And [yet] I have not come of my own accord; the One who sent me is true, [and] ^†you do not know him. •29I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me." •30Therefore they started seeking to arrest him; and [yet] no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. •31But many from the crowd believed in him, and were saying, "Whenever the Christ comes, he will not do more signs than those that this man has done,⁷ [will he]?"

•32The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. •33Jesus then said, "For a little time I am still with ^†you, and [then] I am going to the One who sent me; •34^†you will seek me and ^†you will not find [me]; and where I am ^†you cannot come." •35Then the Jews said among themselves, "Where is this [man] going to go that we shall not find him? He is not going to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, [is he]? •36What does this word mean that he said, '^†You will seek me and ^†you will not find [me]; and where I am ^†you cannot come'?"⁸

•37Now on the last day of the feast, the great [day], Jesus stood up and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me⁹ and drink. •38The one who believes in me, as¹⁰ the scripture has said, 'Out of his stomach shall flow rivers of living water.'" •39Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were going to receive; for the Spirit had not yet been [given],¹¹ because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

•40Therefore when [some] of the crowd heard these words, they started saying, "This is really the prophet." •41Others were saying, "This is the Christ." But some were saying, "Why, the Christ is

not coming out of Galilee, [is he]? •42Has not the scripture said that the Christ is coming out of the offspring of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" •43Therefore there was a division in the crowd because of him. •44And some of them were wishing to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

•45Then the officers went [back] to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did ^†you not bring him?" •46The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this!"¹² •47Then the Pharisees answered them, "^†You have not also been led astray, [have ^†you]? •48Not any of the rulers or of the Pharisees have believed in him, [have they]? •49But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed." •50Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, [and] who was one of them, said* to them, •51"Our law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and finds out what he is doing, [does it]?" •52They answered and said to him, "You are not also from Galilee, [are you]? Search and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee."

•53And they each went to his [own] house, 8•1but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. •2Now at daybreak he came again to the temple. And all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and started teaching them. •3And the scribes and the Pharisees brought* a woman who had been caught in adultery, and standing her in the middle, •4they said* to him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of committing adultery. •5Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such.¹ Therefore what do you say?" •6Now they were saying this to test him, so that they might have [something] to be accusing him of. But Jesus bent down and started writing with [his] finger on the ground. •7And as they continued asking him, he stood erect and said to them, "Let the one who is without sin among ^†you be the first to throw a stone at her." •8And once more he bent down and started writing on the ground.² •9But when they heard [this],³ they started going away one by one, beginning with the oldest, and [Jesus] was left alone and the woman was [there] in the

middle. •10And Jesus stood up erect and⁴ said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" •11She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you; go, and quit sinning any more from now on."

•12Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. The one who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." •13Therefore the Pharisees said to him, "You are testifying about yourself; your testimony is not true." •14Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I am testifying about myself, my testimony is true, because I know where I have come from and where I am going, but ^†you do not know where I have come from or where I am going. •15^†You judge according to the flesh; I do not judge anyone. •16Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, because it is not I alone [that judge], but I and the Father⁵⁵ who sent me. •17And even in ^†your law it is written that the testimony of two men is true;⁶ •18I am one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me." •19Then they started saying to him, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "^†You know neither me nor my Father; if ^†you knew me, ^†you would know my Father also." •20These words he spoke in the treasury, as he was teaching in the temple; and [yet] no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

•21Then he again said to them, "I am going away, and ^†you will seek me and die in ^†your sin; where I am going, ^†you cannot come." •22Therefore the Jews started saying, "He will not kill himself, [will he], since he says, 'Where I am going, ^†you cannot come'?" •23And he started saying to them, "^†You are from below, I am from above; ^†you are from this world, I am not from this world. •24I told ^†you that ^†you will die in ^†your sins, for unless ^†you believe that I am he, ^†you will die in ^†your sins." •25Therefore they started saying to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "Even what I have told ^†you [from] the beginning.⁷ •26I have many things to say about ^†you and to judge; but the One who sent me is true, and I speak to the world the things that I have heard from him." •27They did not know that he was speaking to them of the Father. •28Then Jesus said, "Whenever ^†you have lifted up the Son of man, then ^†you will know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of my own

accord but speak these things just as the Father taught me. •29And the One who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I always do the things that are pleasing to him." •30As he was speaking these things, many believed in him.

•31Then Jesus started saying to the Jews who had believed in him, "If ^†you continue in my word, ^†you are truly my disciples, •32and ^†you will know the truth, and the truth will make ^†you free." •33They answered him, "We are Abraham's offspring and have never been in slavery to anyone. How [is it that] you say, '^†You will be made free'?" •34Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to ^†you that everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. •35And the slave does not continue in the house forever; the son continues forever. •36Therefore if the Son makes ^†you free, ^†you will really be free. •37I know that ^†you are Abraham's offspring; but ^†you are seeking to kill me, because my word has no room in ^†you. •38I speak of what I have seen with [my]⁸ Father, and therefore ^†you are doing what ^†you have heard from [^†your] father."⁹

•39They answered and said to him, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said* to them, "If ^†you were* Abraham's children, ^†you would be doing¹⁰ the works of Abraham. •40But now ^†you are seeking to kill me, a man who has told ^†you the truth which I heard from God; Abraham did not do this. •41^†You are doing the works of ^†your father." They said to him, "We were not born from sexual immorality; we have one Father, [even] God." •42Jesus said to them, "If God were ^†your Father, ^†you would love me, for I came out of and have come from God; I have not come of my own accord, but he sent me. •43Why do ^†you not understand my way of speaking? [It is] because ^†you cannot listen to my word. •44^†You are from [^†your] father the devil, and ^†you wish to be doing ^†your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from [his] own [resources], because he is a liar and the father of the lie.¹¹ •45But, because I tell the truth, ^†you do not believe me. •46Which of ^†you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do ^†you not believe me? •47The one who is from God hears the words of God; for this [reason] ^†you do not hear [that], because ^†you are not from God."

John 8

•48The Jews answered and said to him, "Do we not rightly say that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?" •49Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon; but I honor my Father, and ^†you dishonor me. •50Yet I am not seeking my [own] glory; there is One who seeks [it] and who judges. •51Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, if anyone keeps my word, he shall never see death." •52The Jews said to him, "Now we know that ^†you have a demon. Abraham died, and [so did] the prophets; and you say, 'If anyone keeps my word, he shall never taste death.' •53You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died, [are you]? And the prophets died! Who are you making yourself [out to be]?" •54Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom ^†you say, 'He is our God.'¹² •55And [yet] ^†you have not come to know him; but I know him. And if I say, I do not know him, I will be a liar like ^†you; but I do know him and I keep his word. •56^†Your father Abraham was overjoyed that he would see my day; and he saw [it] and rejoiced." •57Then the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years [old], and have you seen Abraham?"¹³ •58Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, before Abraham was, I am." •59Therefore they took up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid [himself], and went out of the temple.¹⁴

9•1And as he passed by, he saw a man blind from [his] birth. •2And his disciples asked him [a question], saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this [man] or his parents, that he was born blind?" •3Jesus answered, "Neither this [man] sinned, nor his parents [to cause this], but [it happened] so that the works of God might be made apparent in him. •4We¹ have to work the works of the One who sent me,² while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. •5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." •6When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and anointed the man's³ eyes with the clay, •7and said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated, Sent). Therefore he went and washed and came [back] seeing. •8Then the

•13They brought* to the Pharisees him who had formerly been blind. •14Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. •15Therefore the Pharisees also again started asking him how he had received [his] sight. And he said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see." •16Then some of the Pharisees started saying, "This man is not from God, because he does not keep the sabbath." But others were saying, "How can a man who is a sinner be doing such signs?" And there was a division among them. •17Therefore they again said* to the blind man, "What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?" And he said, "He is a prophet."

•18Therefore the Jews did not believe about him that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the one who had received [his] sight, •19and asked them [about it], saying, "Is this ^†your son, who ^†you say was born blind? How then does he now see?" •20Then his parents answered and said, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; •21but how he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself." •22His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess him [to be] Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue. •23For this [reason] his parents said, "He is of age, ask him."

•24Therefore for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, "Give God the glory; we know that this man is a sinner." •25Then he answered, "Whether he is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that although I was blind, now I see." •26Then they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" •27He answered them, "I have told ^†you already, and ^†you did not listen. Why do ^†you wish to hear [it] again? ^†You do not also wish to become his disciples, [do ^†you]?" •28And they reviled him and said, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. •29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but [as for] this [man], we do not

know where he is from." •30The man answered and said to them, "Why, this is a marvelous thing, that ^†you do not know where he is from, and [yet] he opened my eyes! •31We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and keeps doing his will, [God] listens to him. •32From the age [of creation] it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of one born blind. •33If this [man] were not from God, he could not do anything." •34They answered and said to him, "You were entirely born in sins, and are you teaching us?" And they threw him outside.

•35Jesus heard that they had thrown him outside, and having found him he said, "Do you believe in the Son of man?"⁴ •36He answered and said, "And who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him?" •37Jesus said to him, "Indeed you have seen him, and it is he who is speaking with you." •38And he said, "Lord, I believe"; and he worshiped him. •39And Jesus said, "For judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may start seeing, and those who see may become blind." •40[Some] of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, "We are not also blind, are we?" •41Jesus said to them, "If ^†you were blind, ^†you would have no sin; but now [that] ^†you say, 'We see,' ^†your sin remains.

10•1"Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, he who does not enter through the door into the sheepfold but climbs in by another way, that [man] is a thief and a bandit. •2But the one who enters through the door is the shepherd of the sheep. •3To him the doorkeeper opens; and the sheep hear his voice, and [he] calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. •4Whenever he has brought out all [his] own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice. •5Now a stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers." •6This figure Jesus told them, but they did not understand what the things meant that he was saying to them.

•7Therefore Jesus again said, "Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, I am the door of the sheep. •8All who came before me¹ are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. •9I am the door; if

anyone enters through me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. •10The thief does not come except to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they may have life, and have [it] abundantly. •11I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. •12The one who is a hireling and not a shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf snatches them and scatters [them]. •13[He flees] because he is a hireling and it does not matter to him about the sheep. •14I am the good shepherd; and I know my [own] and my [own] know me, •15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. •16And I have other sheep, that are not from this fold; I have to bring them also, and they will hear my voice. And [so] they shall be one flock, [with] one shepherd. •17For this [reason] the Father loves me, because I lay down my life, so that I may take it up again. •18No one takes it away² from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again; this commandment I have received from my Father."

•19There was again a division among the Jews because of these words. •20And many of them were saying, "He has a demon and is crazy; why are ^†you listening to him?" •21Others were saying, "These are not the sayings of one who is demon-possessed. A demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, [can it]?"

•22It was then³ [the feast of] Dedication in Jerusalem. It was winter, •23and Jesus was walking in the temple, in Solomon's Colonnade. •24Then the Jews surrounded him and started saying to him, "How long will you keep us⁴ [in suspense]? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly." •25Jesus answered them, "I told ^†you, and ^†you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name, they testify about me; •26but ^†you do not believe, because ^†you are not [part] of my sheep.⁵ •27My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; •28and I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. •29That which my Father has given me⁶ is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch [them] out of the Father's hand. •30I and the Father are one."

John 10

•31The Jews took up stones again to stone him. •32Jesus answered them, "I have shown ^†you many good works from the Father; for which work among them do ^†you stone me?" •33The Jews answered him, "We are not stoning ^†you for a good work but for blasphemy; that is, because you, being a man, make yourself God." •34Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in ^†your law,⁷ 'I said, ^†you are gods'⁸? •35If he called them gods to whom the word of God came (and scripture cannot be broken), •36do ^†you say of him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'? •37If I am not doing the works of my Father, do not believe me; •38but if I am doing [them], even though ^†you do not believe me, believe the works, so that ^†you may know and keep knowing⁹ that the Father [is] in me and I [am] in the Father." •39Then they again started seeking to arrest him, but he escaped from their hand.

•40And he went away again to the other side of the Jordan to the place where John at first was baptizing, and he started staying there. •41And many came to him; and they were saying, "John did no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true." •42And many believed in him there.

11•1Now a certain [man] was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. •2Now it was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. •3Therefore the sisters sent to him, saying, "Lord, behold, he whom you love is sick." •4But when Jesus heard [it] he said, "This sickness is not to death, but [is] for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it."

•5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. •6Therefore when he heard that he was sick, then he stayed two days [longer] in the place where he was. •7Then after this he said* to the disciples, "Let us go into Judea again." •8The disciples said* to him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and you are going there again?" •9Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. •10But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him." •11He said these things, and after this he said* to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I might wake him up." •12Then the disciples said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he

will become well." •13Now Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that he was speaking about the sleep of rest. •14Therefore Jesus then said to them plainly, "Lazarus is dead; •15and I rejoice for ^†your sake that I was not there, so that ^†you may believe. But let us go to him." •16Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."

•17Then when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus¹ had already [been] in the tomb four days. •18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia² away, •19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning [their] brother. •20Therefore when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary was sitting in the house. •21Then Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. •22And even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you." •23Jesus said* to her, "Your brother will rise again." •24Martha said* to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day." •25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life;³ the one who believes in me, even though he die, [yet] shall he live, •26and anyone who is living and believing in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" •27She said* to him, "Yes, Lord; I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the One who is coming into the world."

•28And when she had said this, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you." •29And when she heard [this], she rose* quickly and started going to him. •30Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. •31Therefore when the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her saw that Mary rose quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. •32Then when Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." •33Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her [also] weeping, he was deeply moved in

spirit and troubled. •34And he said, "Where have ^†you laid him?" They said* to him, "Lord, come and see." •35Jesus shed tears. •36Therefore the Jews started saying, "See how he loved him!" •37But some of them said, "Could not this one who opened the eyes of the blind [man] have done [something] so that indeed this [man] would not have died?"

•38Then Jesus, again deeply moved within himself, came* to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying on it. •39Jesus said*, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the one who had died, said* to him, "Lord, there is already an odor, for he has been [dead] four days." •40Jesus said* to her, "Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?" •41Therefore they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up [his] eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. •42And I knew that you hear me always, but because of the crowd standing around I have said [this], so that they may believe you have sent me." •43And when he had said this, he cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come outside." •44The one who had died came out, [his] feet and hands bound with grave-clothes, and his face wrapped with a handkerchief. Jesus said* to them, "Loose him, and let him go."

•45Therefore many of the Jews who had come with Mary and had seen the things which⁴ he did, believed in him; •46but some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done. •47Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council,⁵ and started saying, "What are we to do? Because this man does many signs. •48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation." •49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "^†You do not know anything; •50nor do ^†you take into account that it is expedient for ^†you⁶ that one man should die for the people, and [that] the whole nation should not perish." •51Now he did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, •52and not for the

nation only, but so that he might gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. •53Then from that day on they resolved that they would kill him.

•54Therefore Jesus was no longer going around openly among the Jews, but went from there to the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim; and there he stayed with the disciples.

•55Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. •56Therefore they were seeking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, "What do ^†you think? That he will not come to the feast?" •57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commands that if anyone knew where he was, he should inform [them], so that they might arrest him.

12•1Then six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus¹ was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. •2Therefore they made him a supper there, and Martha was serving, and Lazarus was one of those sitting [at the table] with him. •3Then Mary took a pound of very valuable ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. •4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was going to betray him), said*, •5"Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii² and given to the poor?" •6Now he said this, not because it mattered to him about the poor, but because he was a thief, and since he had the money box he used to take what was put [into it]. •7Jesus said, "Let her alone, so that she may keep it³ for the day of my burial. •8For the poor ^†you always have with ^†you, but ^†you [will] not always have me."⁴

•9Then a large crowd of the Jews found out that he was there, and they came, not only because of Jesus, but also so that they might see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. •10But the chief priests resolved that they would kill Lazarus also, •11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

John 12

•12The next day when the⁵ large crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, •13they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, and they started crying out, "Hosanna! Blessed [is] the One who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" •14And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it; just as it is written,

•20Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast. •21Then these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and started making a request of him, saying, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." •22Philip went* and told* Andrew; Andrew and Philip went* and told* Jesus. •23And Jesus answered* them, saying, "The hour has come that the Son of man should be glorified. •24Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. •25The one who loves his life⁸ loses it, and the one who hates his life⁸ in this world will keep it for eternal life. •26If anyone is serving me, he must be following me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if anyone is serving me, the Father will honor him.

John 12

•27"Now my soul has become troubled. And what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? But for this [purpose] I have come to this hour. •28Father, glorify your name."⁹ Then a voice came from heaven, "I have both glorified [it], and I will glorify [it] again." •29Therefore the crowd standing by also heard [it] and started saying that it had thundered. Others were saying, "An angel has spoken to him." •30Jesus answered and said, "This voice has come, not for my sake, but for ^†your sake. •31Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be thrown outside. •32And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all [people]¹⁰ to myself." •33Now he was saying this to indicate by what sort of death he was going to die. •34Then the crowd answered him, "We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how [can] you say that the Son of man has to be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?" •35Then Jesus said to them, "For a little time the light is still among^{11 †}you. Keep walking while ^†you have the light, lest the darkness overcome ^†you; and the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. •36While ^†you have the light, keep believing in the light, so that ^†you may become sons of light."

Jesus spoke these things and departed and hid [himself] from them. •37But although he had done so many signs before them, [yet] they did not believe in him, •38so that the word which Isaiah the prophet said might be fulfilled:

John 12

•44And Jesus cried out and said, "The one who believes in me, believes not in me but in the One who sent me. •45And the one who sees me sees the One who sent me. •46I have come [as] light into the world, so that anyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness. •47And if anyone hears my sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. •48The one who rejects me and does not receive my sayings has one who judges him; the word that I have spoken—that will judge him in the last day. •49Because I have not spoken of my own accord, but the Father who sent me has himself given me commandment what I should say and what I should speak. •50And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I speak, therefore, I speak like this, just as the Father has said to me."

13•1Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to move on out of this world to the Father, having loved [his] own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. •2And during supper, when the devil had already put [it] into the heart of Judas, [the son] of Simon Iscariot, to betray him, •3[Jesus], knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come out from God and was going to God, •4rose* from supper, laid* aside his clothes, and taking a towel, he tied [it] around himself. •5Then he put* water into a basin, and began washing the disciples' feet, and wiping [them] with the towel which he had tied around [himself]. •6Then he came* to Simon Peter; [and Peter] said* to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?" •7Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not know just now, but you will come to know after this." •8Peter said* to him, "You shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with me." •9Simon Peter said* to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!" •10Jesus said* to him, "The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for [his] feet,¹ but he is wholly clean; and ^†you are clean, but not all [of ^†you]." •11For he knew who was to betray him; for this [reason] he said, "^†You are not all clean."

•12Then when he had washed their feet, and taken his clothes, and sat down again, he said to them, "Do ^†you know what I have done to ^†you? •13^†You call me Teacher and Lord; and ^†you rightly say [this], for [so] I am. •14If I then, [^†your] Lord and Teacher, have washed ^†your feet, ^†you also

ought to be washing one another's feet. •15For I have given ^†you an example, that ^†you also should be doing just as I have done to ^†you. •16Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, a slave is not greater than his lord; nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. •17If ^†you know these things, blessed are ^†you if ^†you keep doing them. •18I am not speaking about ^†you all; I know whom I have chosen; but [it is] that the scripture may be fulfilled, 'The one who ate my bread² has lifted his heel against me.'³ •19From now on I am telling ^†you this before it happens, so that whenever it does happen ^†you may believe that I am [he]. •20Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, the one who receives whomever I send receives me; and the one who receives me receives the One who sent me."

•21When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, "Truly, truly, I say to ^†you that one of ^†you will betray me." •22The disciples started looking at one another, puzzled about whom he was speaking. •23One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at Jesus' bosom. •24Therefore Simon Peter nodded* to him to inquire who it might be about whom he was* speaking.⁴ •25[So] just leaning back on the chest of Jesus, he said* to him, "Lord, who is it?" •26Then Jesus answered*, "It is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give [it] to him." Then when he had dipped the morsel, he took* [it] and gave* [it] to Judas, [the son] of Simon Iscariot.⁵ •27Then after [receiving] the morsel, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said* to him, "What you are doing, do quickly." •28Now no one sitting [at the table] knew for what [reason] he said this to him. •29For some were thinking, since Judas had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, "Buy what we need for the feast"; or, that he should give something to the poor. •30Then after receiving the morsel, he immediately went out; and it was night.

•31Then when he had gone out, Jesus said*, "Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him; •32if God is glorified in him,⁶ God will also glorify him in him, and will glorify him

immediately. •33Little children, yet a little while I am with ^†you. ^†You will seek me; and just as I said to the Jews, 'Where I am going ^†you cannot come', I now also say [this] to ^†you. •34A new commandment I give to ^†you, that ^†you keep loving one another; just as I have loved ^†you, that ^†you also keep loving one another. •35By this all [men] will know that ^†you are my disciples, if ^†you keep having love for one another."

•36Simon Peter said* to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going you cannot follow me now; but you shall follow afterwards." •37Peter said* to him, "Lord, why cannot I follow you right now? I will lay down my life for you." •38Jesus answered*, "Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster shall not crow until you have denied me three times.

14•1"Quit letting ^†your heart be troubled; keep believing¹ in God, keep believing¹ also in me. •2In my Father's house are many places of residence; now if [it were] not [so], I would have told ^†you, because I go to prepare a place for ^†you.² •3And if I go and prepare a place for ^†you, I will come again and will take ^†you to myself, so that where I am ^†you may be also. •4And ^†you know the way where I am going."³ •5Thomas said* to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going; how do we know the way?" •6Jesus said* to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, except through me. •7If ^†you have come to know me, ^†you will come to know my Father also;⁴ from now on ^†you know him and have seen him."

•8Philip said* to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and [that] is enough for us." •9Jesus said* to him, "Have I been with ^†you so long a time, and [yet] you have not come to know me, Philip? The one who has seen me has seen the Father; how [is it that] you say, 'Show us the Father'? •10Do you

not believe that I [am] in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to ^†you I do not speak of my own accord; but the Father who abides in me does his works. •11Keep believing me that I [am] in the Father and the Father [is] in me; or else keep believing⁵ because of the works themselves. •12"Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, the one who believes in me—he will also do the works that I do; and greater [works] than these will he do, because I go to the Father. •13And whatever ^†you ask in my name, I will do it, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son; •14if ^†you ask me⁶ anything in my name, I will do [it].

•15"If ^†you love me, ^†you will keep my commandments.⁷ •16And I will request of the Father, and he will give ^†you another Counselor, so that he may be with ^†you forever, •17[that is], the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows [him]; ^†you know him, because he abides with ^†you, and he will be⁸ in ^†you. •18"I will not leave ^†you [as] orphans; I am coming to ^†you. •19Yet a little while, and the world [will] see me no more, but ^†you [will] see me; because I live, ^†you will live also. •20In that day ^†you will know that I [am] in my Father, and ^†you in me, and I in ^†you. •21The one who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and the one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and make myself apparent to him." •22Judas (not Iscariot) said* to him, "Lord, and what has happened that you are going to make yourself apparent to us, and not to the world?" •23Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our residence with him. •24The one who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which ^†you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.

•25"These things I have spoken to ^†you, while I am abiding with ^†you. •26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach ^†you all things, and remind ^†you of all that I have said to ^†you. •27Peace I leave with ^†you; my peace I give to ^†you; not as the world gives do I give to ^†you. Quit letting ^†your heart be troubled, and quit letting it be cowardly. •28^†You heard me say to ^†you, 'I am going away, and I am coming [again] to ^†you.' If ^†you loved me, ^†you would have rejoiced that I go to the Father; because the Father is greater than I. •29And now I have

told ^†you before it happens, so that whenever it does happen, ^†you may believe. •30I will no longer talk much with ^†you, for the ruler of the world is coming. And [yet] he has no power within me; •31but, so that the world may know that I love the Father, even so I do just as the Father commanded me. Rise, let us be going from here.

15•1"I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.¹ •2Every branch in me that does not bear fruit, he prunes² it, so that it may keep bearing more fruit. •3^†You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to ^†you. •4Abide in me, and I in ^†you. Just as the branch cannot keep bearing fruit of its own accord, unless it is abiding in the vine, so neither [can] ^†you, unless ^†you are abiding in me. •5I am the vine, ^†you [are] the branches. The one who abides in me, and I in him, he bears much fruit, because apart from me ^†you cannot do anything. •6Unless someone is abiding in me, he is thrown outside like a branch and withers; and [people] gather them and throw [them] into the fire and they are burned. •7If ^†you abide in me, and my words abide in ^†you, ask whatever ^†you wish, and it shall be done for ^†you. •8By this my Father is glorified, that ^†you keep bearing much fruit, and so be³ my disciples.

•9"Just as the Father has loved me, I also have loved ^†you; abide in my love. •10If ^†you keep my commandments, ^†you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. •11These things I have spoken to ^†you, so that my joy may be in ^†you, and [that] ^†your joy may be full. •12This is my commandment, that ^†you keep loving one another just as I have loved ^†you. •13Greater love has no one than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends. •14^†You are my friends if ^†you keep doing what I command ^†you. •15No longer do I call ^†you slaves, because the slave does not know what his lord is doing; but I have called ^†you friends, because all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to ^†you. •16^†You did not choose me, but I chose ^†you and appointed ^†you that ^†you should keep going and bearing fruit and [that] ^†your fruit should keep abiding; so that whatever ^†you ask the Father in my name, he may give [it] to ^†you. •17This I command ^†you, that ^†you keep loving one another.

John 15

•18"If the world hates ^†you, ^†you know that it has hated me before [it hated] ^†you. •19If ^†you were of the world, the world would be loving [its] own; but because ^†you are not of the world, but I chose ^†you out of the world, for this [reason] the world hates ^†you. •20Keep remembering the word that I said to ^†you, 'A slave is not greater than his lord.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute ^†you; if they kept my word, they will keep ^†yours also. •21But all these things they will do to ^†you because of my name, because they do not know the One who sent me. •22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. •23The one who hates me hates my Father also. •24If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father. •25But [this has happened] so that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, 'They hated me without a cause.'⁴

•26"Whenever the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to ^†you from the Father, [that is], the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will testify about me; •27and ^†you also are witnesses, because ^†you have been with me from the beginning.

16•1"I have spoken these things to ^†you so that ^†you might not be ensnared [so as to fall away]. •2They will put ^†you out of the synagogues; indeed the hour is coming that everyone who kills ^†you will think he is offering service to God. •3And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. •4But I have spoken these things to ^†you, so that whenever their¹ hour comes ^†you may remember that I told ^†you of them.

"Now I did not say these things to ^†you from the beginning, because I was with ^†you. •5But now I am going to the One who sent me; and [yet] none of ^†you asks me, 'Where are you going?' •6But because I have spoken these things to ^†you, sorrow has filled ^†your heart. •7Nevertheless I tell ^†you the truth: it is more expedient for ^†you that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Counselor shall not come to ^†you; but if I go, I will send him to ^†you. •8And when he comes, he will convince the world about sin and about righteousness and about judgment: •9about sin, because they do not

believe in me; •10about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and ^†you [will] see me no more; •11about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

•12"I still have many things to say to ^†you, but ^†you cannot bear [them] right now. •13But whenever he comes, [that is], the Spirit of truth, he will guide ^†you into all the truth; for he will not speak of his own accord, but whatever he shall hear he will speak, and he will disclose to ^†you the things that are to come. •14He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and disclose [it] to ^†you. •15All that the Father has is mine; for this [reason] I said that he takes what is mine and will disclose [it] to ^†you.

•16"A little while, and ^†you [will] no longer observe me; and again a little while, and ^†you will see me.²" •17Then [some] of his disciples said to one another, "What is this that he says to us, 'A little while, and ^†you [will] not observe me, and again a little while, and ^†you will see me'; and, 'because I am going to the Father'?" •18Then they started saying, "What is this which he is saying,³ 'a little while'? We do not know what he is saying." •19Jesus knew that they were wishing to ask him [about this]; and [so] he said to them, "Are ^†you seeking among one another the meaning about this that I said, 'A little while, and ^†you [will] not observe me, and again a little while, and ^†you will see me'? •20Truly, truly, I say to ^†you that ^†you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; ^†you will be sorrowful, but ^†your sorrow will turn into joy. •21Whenever a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow, because her hour has come, but whenever she has borne the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. •22Therefore ^†you also have⁴ sorrow now, but I will see ^†you again and ^†your heart will rejoice, and no one [will] take ^†your joy from ^†you. •23And in that day ^†you will not ask me anything. Truly, truly, I say to ^†you, whatever ^†you ask the Father for in my name, he will give ^†you.⁵ •24Up till now ^†you have not asked for anything in my name; start asking, and ^†you will receive, so that ^†your joy may be full.

•25"I have spoken these things to ^†you in figures; the hour is coming when I will no longer speak to ^†you in figures but tell ^†you plainly about the Father. •26In that day ^†you will ask in my name; and I do not say to ^†you that I shall request of the Father for ^†you; •27for the Father himself loves ^†you, because ^†you have loved me and have believed that I came out from God.⁶ •28I came out

John 16

from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father." •29His disciples said*, "Behold, now you are speaking plainly, and not using any figure! •30Now we know that you know all things, and have no need for anyone to question you; by this we believe that you came out from God." •31Jesus answered them, "Do ^†you now believe? •32Behold, the hour is coming and has come, that ^†you will be scattered, each one to [his] own [home], and will leave me alone; and [yet] I am not alone, because the Father is with me. •33I have spoken these things to ^†you, so that in me ^†you may have peace. In the world ^†you have tribulation; but have courage, I have overcome the world."

17•1Jesus spoke these things, and [then] lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, •2since you have given him authority over all flesh, so that he might give eternal life to all those whom you have given him. •3And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. •4I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work which you had given me to do; •5and now, Father, glorify me beside you with the glory which I had beside you before the world existed.

•6"I have made your name apparent to the men whom you gave me out of the world; they were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. •7Now they have come to know that everything that you have given me is from you; •8because I have given them the words which you gave me, and they have received [them] and have truly come to know that I came out from you; and they have believed that you sent me. •9I am making a request for them; I am not making a request for the world but for those whom you have given me, because they are yours; •10and all mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I have been glorified in them. •11And [now] I am no longer in the world, and [yet] they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which¹ you have given me, that they may be one, just as we [are]. •12While I was with them, I was keeping them in your name, which¹ you have given me; and I have guarded them, and none of them were lost² except the son of destruction, so that the scripture might be fulfilled.³ •13But now I am coming to you; and these things I speak in the world, so that they may

have my joy fulfilled in themselves. •14I have given them your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. •15I am not requesting that you should take them out of the world, but that you should keep them from the evil one.⁴ •16They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. •17Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. •18Just as you sent me into the world, [so] I also have sent them into the world. •19And on their behalf I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.

•20"Now I am not making a request only for these, but also for those who believe in me through their word, •21that they all may be one; just as you, Father, [are] in me, and I [am] in you, that they also may be⁵ in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. •22And the glory which you have given me I have given to them, so that they may be one just as we [are] one, •23I in them and you in me, that they may be perfected into one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them just as you have loved me. •24Father, I wish that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to observe my glory which you have given me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world. •25O righteous Father, indeed the world has not known you, but I have known you; and these have come to know that you have sent me. •26And I made known to them your name, and I will make [it] known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them."

18•1When Jesus had said these things, he went out with his disciples to the other side of the Kidron valley, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered. •2Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with his disciples. •3Then Judas, procuring a regiment [of soldiers] and [some] officers from the chief priests and from the Pharisees, went* there with lanterns and torches and weapons. •4Then Jesus, knowing all that was coming on him, went out and said* to them, "Whom do ^†you seek?" •5They answered him, "Jesus the Nazorean." [Jesus] said* to them, "I am [he]." Now Judas, who betrayed him, was also standing with them. •6Then when he said to them, "I am [he]," they drew back and fell to the

•12Then the regiment and [its] colonel and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him. •13And they led him away to Annas first;¹ for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.¹ •14Now Caiaphas was the one who had given counsel to the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die for the people.

•15And Simon Peter was following Jesus, and [so was] another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, •16but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the [maid] who kept the door, and brought Peter in. •17The maid who kept the door said* to Peter, "You are not also [one] of this man's disciples, [are you]?" He said*, "I am not." •18Now the slaves and officers stood by a charcoal fire they had made because it was cold, and they were warming [themselves]; and Peter also was with them, standing and warming [himself].

•19The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. •20Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in a synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; I have spoken nothing in secret. •21Why are you questioning me? Question those who have heard what I spoke to them; behold, they know what I said." •22And when he had said this, one of the officers standing by gave Jesus a slap [in the face], saying, "Are you to answer the high priest like this?" •23Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken

wrongly, testify about the wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you hit me?" •24Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

•25Now Simon Peter was standing and warming [himself]. Therefore they said to him, "You are not also [one] of his disciples, [are you]?" He denied it and said, "I am not." •26One of the slaves of the high priest, who was a relative of [the man] whose ear Peter had cut off, said*, "Did I not see you in the garden with him?" •27Then Peter again denied [it]; and immediately a rooster crowed.

•28Then they led* Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace.² Now it was early. And they themselves did not enter into the palace,² so that they might not be [ritually] polluted, but might eat the passover. •29Therefore Pilate went outside to them and said*, "What accusation do ^†you bring against this man?" •30They answered and said to him, "If this [man] was not doing evil, we would not have delivered him to you." •31Then Pilate said to them, "Take him ^†yourselves and judge him according to ^†your law." The Jews said to him, "It is not permissible for us to kill anyone." •32[This was] so that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he had spoken to indicate by what sort of death he was going to die.

•33Then Pilate entered into the palace² again and called Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" •34Jesus answered, "Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say [it] to you about me?" •35Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, [am I]? Your [own] nation and the chief priests have delivered you to me; what have you done?" •36Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my attendants would be struggling, so that I might not be delivered to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not here." •37Therefore Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You are saying that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, so that I might testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice." •38Pilate said* to him, "What is truth?"

And after he had said this, he again went out to the Jews, and said* to them, "I find no crime in him. •39Now ^†you have a custom that I should release one man to ^†you at the Passover; therefore

do ^†you want me to release to ^†you the King of the Jews?" •40Then they cried out again, saying, "Not this [man], but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a bandit.

19•1Therefore Pilate then took Jesus and had [him] whipped. •2And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns, and put [it] on his head, and dressed him in a purple cloak. •3And they kept coming up to him and saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and giving him slaps [in the face]. •4Pilate went outside again, and said* to them, "Behold, I am bringing him outside to ^†you, so that ^†you may know that I find no crime in him." •5Then Jesus came outside, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak. And [Pilate] said* to them, "Behold, the man!" •6Therefore, when the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify, crucify!" Pilate said* to them, "Take him ^†yourselves and crucify [him], for I find no crime in him." •7The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and according to [that] law he ought to die, because he has made himself the Son of God." •8Therefore, when Pilate heard these words, he was [even] more afraid. •9And he entered into the palace¹ again and said* to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus did not give him an answer. •10Therefore Pilate said* to him, "You are not speaking to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you, and I have authority to crucify you?" •11Jesus answered him, "You would have no authority over me unless it had been given you from above; for this [reason] the one who delivered me to you has the greater sin."

•12As a result of this Pilate kept seeking to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying, "If you release this [man], you are not Caesar's friend; everyone who makes himself a king is opposing Caesar." •13Then when Pilate heard these words he brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. •14Now it was [the day of] Preparation of the Passover [week]; it was about the sixth hour. And he said* to the Jews, "Behold, ^†your King!" •15Then they cried out, "Away with [him], away with [him], crucify him!" Pilate said* to them, "Shall I crucify ^†your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king except Caesar." •16Therefore he then delivered him to them to be crucified.

Then they took Jesus,² •17and he went out, carrying his [own] cross, to the place called [the place] of a skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha. •18There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus in the middle. •19And Pilate also wrote a title and put [it] on the

cross; now on it was written, "Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews." •20Therefore many of the Jews read this title, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, [and] in Greek. •21Therefore the chief priests of the Jews started saying to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'He said, I am King of the Jews.'" •22Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written."

•23Then when the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his clothes and made four parts, [one] part for each soldier; also [his] tunic. But the tunic was without seam, woven from the top to the bottom. •24Therefore they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but gamble for it [to see] whose it shall be." [This was] so that the scripture might be fulfilled,

So then, these things [are what] the soldiers did.

•25But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the [wife] of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. •26Therefore when Jesus saw [his] mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said* to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" •27Then he said* to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to [his] own [home].

•28After this Jesus, knowing that all had already been finished, said* (so that the scripture might be accomplished⁴), "I thirst." •29A vessel full of vinegar was sitting there; therefore they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop⁵ and held [it] to his mouth. •30Then when Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished"; and he bowed [his] head and gave up [his] spirit.

•31Therefore, since it was [the day of] Preparation, so that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a high day), the Jews requested of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and [that] they might be taken away. •32Therefore the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him; •33but when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. •34But one of the soldiers pierced his

•38Now after this Joseph from Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, requested of Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave [him] permission. Therefore he came and took away his body. •39And Nicodemus also, who had at first come to him by night, came bringing a mixture⁹ of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred [Roman] pounds¹⁰ [weight]. •40Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the custom of the Jews in preparing for burial. •41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. •42Therefore, because of the Jews' [day of] Preparation, [and] because the tomb was near by, they laid Jesus there.

20•1Now on the first [day] of the week Mary Magdalene went* to the tomb early, while it was* still dark, and saw* that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. •2Therefore she ran* and went* to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, who Jesus loved, and said* to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." •3Peter then went out, and [so did] the other disciple, and they started going to the tomb. •4Now the two were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and came to the tomb first. •5And stooping to look in, he saw* the linen cloths lying [there], but he did not go in. •6Then Simon Peter

also came*, following him, and went into the tomb; and he observed* the linen cloths lying there, •7and the handkerchief, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. •8Therefore then the other disciple, who had come to the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; •9for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he had to rise from the dead. •10Then the disciples went back again to their [home].

•11But Mary stood outside at the tomb, weeping. Then as she was weeping, she stooped to look into the tomb, •12and she observed* two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and one at the feet. •13And they said* to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said* to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him." •14Saying this, she turned around and observed* Jesus standing [there], but she did not know that it was Jesus. •15Jesus said* to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?" Supposing him to be the gardener, she said* to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away." •16Jesus said* to her, "Mary." She turned* and said* to him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which is to say, Teacher). •17Jesus said* to her, "Quit clinging to me! For I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and ^†your Father, and [to] my God and ^†your God." •18Mary Magdalene came* bringing the news to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord"; and [she told them that] he had said these things to her.

•19Then when it was evening on that day, the first [day] of the week, and the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in [their] midst and said* to them, "Peace to ^†you." •20And when he had said this, he showed them both [his] hands and [his] side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. •21Then Jesus said to them again, "Peace to ^†you. Just as the Father has sent me, I am also sending ^†you." •22And when he had said this, he breathed on [them], and said* to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. •23Whoever's sins ^†you forgive, they are forgiven them; whoever's [sins] ^†you retain, they are retained."

John 20

•24Now Thomas, one the the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. •25Therefore the other disciples were saying to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger in the print of the nails, and put my hand in his side, I will not believe."

•26And after eight days, his disciples were again inside [the house], and Thomas [was] with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came* and stood in [their] midst and said, "Peace to ^†you." •27Then he said* to Thomas, "Reach out your finger here, and see my hands; and reach out your hand, and put [it] in my side; do not be unbelieving, but believing." •28Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God!" •29Jesus said* to him, "Because you have seen me, have you believed? Blessed [are] those who have not seen and [yet] believe."

•30Now then Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book; •31but these are written so that ^†you may believe¹ that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ^†you may have life in his name.

21•1After this Jesus made himself appear again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he appeared like this: •2There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called the Twin, and Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, and the [sons] of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. •3Simon Peter said* to them, "I am going fishing." They said* to him, "We are coming with you also." They went out and got into the boat; and [yet] that night they caught nothing.

•4But when early morning was already coming, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. •5Then Jesus said* to them, "Children, ^†you do not have any fish to eat, [do ^†you]?" They answered him, "No." •6And he said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and ^†you will find [some]." Therefore they cast [it], and they were no longer able to haul it in, for the quantity of fish. •7Then that disciple whom Jesus loved said* to Peter, "It is the Lord!" Then when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tied [his] coat around [him], for he was

naked and threw himself into the sea. •8But the other disciples came in the small boat, dragging the net of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits¹ off.

•9Then when they got out on land, they saw* a charcoal fire lying [there], and fish lying on [it], and bread. •10Jesus said* to them, "Bring [some] of the fish that ^†you have just caught." •11Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net to land, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three [of them]; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. •12Jesus said* to them, "Come [and] have breakfast." None of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. •13Jesus came* and took* the bread and gave* [it] to them, and likewise the fish. •14This was already the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

•15Then when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said* to Simon Peter, "Simon, [son] of John,² do you love me more than these?" He said* to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you [like a friend]." He said* to him, "Keep feeding my lambs." •16He said* to him again a second time, "Simon, [son] of John,² do you love me?" He said* to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you [like a friend]." He said* to him, "Keep shepherding my sheep." •17He said* to him the third time, "Simon, [son] of John,² do you love me [like a friend]?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third thim, "Do you love me [like a friend]?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you [like a friend]." Jesus said* to him, "Keep feeding my sheep. •18Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to tie your [belt] and walk where you wished; but whenever you grow aged, you will stretch out your hands, and another will tie you and carry [you] where you do not wish [to go]." •19(Now he said this to indicate by what sort of death he would glorify God.) And after saying this, he said* to him, "Start following me."

•20Peter turned and saw* following [them] the disciple whom Jesus loved, who had leaned back on his chest at the supper and said, "Lord, who is the one betraying you?" •21Therefore when Peter saw him, he said* to Jesus, "Lord,

and what [about] this [man]?" •22Jesus said* to him, "If I wish him to remain until I come, what [is that] to you? You keep following me!" •23Therefore this saying went out among the brothers that that disciple is not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he is not to die, but, "If I wish him to remain until I come, what [is that] to you?"³

•24This is the disciple who is testifying about these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true.

•25But there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if every one [of them] were written, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.⁴
