1•1Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative about the things which have been accomplished¹ among us, •2just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and attendants of the word delivered [them] to us, •3it seemed good to me also, having investigated all things carefully² from the very first, to write an [account] for you in orderly sequence, most excellent Theophilus, •4so that you may know the certainty of the things about which you were instructed.

•5In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a certain priest named Zechariah,³ of the [priestly] division of Abijah;⁴ and his wife [was one] of the daughters of Aaron, and her name [was] Elizabeth. •6Now they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and righteous requirements of the Lord blameless. •7And [yet] they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years.⁵

•8Now it happened [that] while he was serving as priest before God in the tour of duty of his division, •9according to the custom of the priestly office, he was assigned by lot to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. •10And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. •11And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right [side] of the altar of incense. •12And Zechariah was troubled when he saw [him], and fear fell upon him. •13But the angel said to him, "Quit being afraid, Zechariah, because your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

Luke 1

•24Now after these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and she kept herself hidden five months, saying, •25"Thus the Lord has done to me in the days when he looked on [me], to take away my reproach among men."

•26Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, •27to a virgin betrothed⁸ to a man whose name [was] Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name [was] Mary. •28And he came to her and said, "Hello, O favored one, the Lord [is] with you!"⁹ •29But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and started considering what sort of greeting this might be. •30And the angel said to her, "Quit being afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. •31And behold, you will conceive in [your] womb and give birth to a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.

Luke 1

•39Now Mary arose in these days and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, •40and she entered into the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. •41And it happened [that] when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit •42and she called out with a loud cry and said, "Blessed [are] you among women, and blessed [is] the fruit of your womb! •43And why [is] this [granted] me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? •44For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped in great joy. •45And blessed [is] she who believed that there will be¹³ a fulfillment of what has been spoken to her from the Lord." •46And Mary¹⁴ said,

Luke 1

•57Now Elizabeth's time came¹⁶ for her to give birth, and she bore a son. •58And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they were rejoicing with her. •59And it happened [that] on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they were calling him Zechariah after the name of his father, •60but in response his mother said, "Not [so]; but he shall be called John." •61And they said to her, "There are none of your relatives called by this name." •62And they started making signs to his father [to find out] what he would wish him to be called. •63And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, "His name is John." And they all marveled. •64And instantly his mouth was opened and his tongue [loosed], and he started speaking, blessing God. •65And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were being talked about throughout the whole hill country of Judea; •66and all who heard [them] laid [them] up in their heart, saying, "What then will this child be?" For indeed the hand of the Lord was with him.¹⁷

•67And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,

Luke 1

•80And the child kept growing and becoming strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

2•1Now it happened [that] in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus for all the inhabited [earth] to be registered. •2This was the first registration, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. •3And everyone was going to be registered, each to his own city. •4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the household and family of David, •5to be registered with Mary, who was betrothed¹ to him and was pregnant. •6Now it happened that while they were there, the days came² for her to give birth. •7And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in strips of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the lodging place.³

Luke 2

•8And in the same country there were shepherds living out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. •9And an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear.⁴ •10And the angel said to them, "Quit being afraid; for behold, I am bringing ^†you good news of a great joy which will be for all the people; •11because for ^†you is born today in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.⁵ •12And this [will be] the sign for ^†you: ^†you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger." •13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

•15And it happened that when the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds started saying to one another, "Let us now go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." •16And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. •17Now when they saw [him] they made known the saying which had been told them about this child; •18and all who heard [it] marveled about the things told to them by the shepherds. •19But Mary was keeping all these things, pondering [them] in her heart. •20And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.

•21And when eight days had passed² [and it was time] to circumcise him, then his name was called Jesus, the [name] given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

•22And when the days for their purification according to the law of Moses⁷ had passed,² they brought him up to Jerusalem to present [him] to the Lord •23(as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord")⁸ •24and to offer a sacrifice

Luke 2

according to what is said in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons."⁹ •25And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name [was] Simeon, and this man [was] righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. •26And it had been imparted to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. •27And he came by the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, for them to do for him according to the custom of the law, •28then he took him up in [his] arms and blessed God and said,

•33And his father and mother¹⁰ were marveling at what was being spoken about him; •34and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,

•36And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher; she was greatly advanced in age,¹¹ having lived with [her] husband seven years from her virginity, •37and [as] a widow until she [was] eighty-four years [old]. She did not depart from the temple, serving [God] with fastings and petitions night and day. •38And coming up at [that] very hour she started giving thanks to God, and was speaking about him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.¹²

•39And when they had finished everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their [own] city, Nazareth. •40And the child kept growing and becoming strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was on him.

Luke 2

•41And his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. •42And when he was twelve years [old], they went up according to the custom of the feast; •43and when the days [of the feast] were ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, and his parents¹⁰ did not know [it]. •44But supposing him to be in the company they went a day's journey, and they started seeking him among [their] relatives and acquaintances. •45And when they did not find [him], they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him. •46And it happened [that] after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. •47And all who heard him were being astounded at his intelligence and answers. •48And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, "Child, twhy have you done us like this? Behold, your father and I have been seeking you anxiously." •49And he said to them, "Why [is it] that ^†you were seeking me? Did ^†you not know that I have to be in my Father's [house]?" •50And they did not comprehend the saying which he spoke to them. •51And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them; and his mother was keeping all these things in her heart.

•52And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and in stature,¹³ and [in] favor with God and men.

3•1Now in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, •2in the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. •3And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism¹ of repentance for² the forgiveness of sins, •4as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

Luke 3

•7Therefore he was saying to the crowds that came out to be baptized⁴ by him, "[^†You] brood of vipers! Who warned ^†you to flee from the future wrath? •8Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin saying to ^†yourselves, 'We have Abraham [as our] father'; for I say to ^†you that God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. •9And indeed already the axe is being laid to the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."

•10And the crowds started questioning him, saying, "What then should we do?" •11And he answered by saying to them, "The one who has two tunics must share with the one who does not have [any], and the one who has food must do so [too]." •12And tax collectors also came to be baptized,⁴ and said to him, "Teacher, what should we do?" •13And he said to them, "Collect no more than what ^†you have been ordered to." •14And soldiers were also questioning him, saying, "And we, what should we do?" And he said to them, "Exhort from no one by violence nor by false accusation, and be content with ^†your wages."

•15Now as the people were in expectation, and they all were reasoning in their hearts about John, whether perhaps he himself might be the Christ, •16John answered by saying to [them] all, "Indeed I am baptizing^{4 †}you [in] water; but the One who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose shoes I am not fit to unloose; he will baptize^{4 †}you in the Holy Spirit and fire. •17His winnowing fork [is] in his hand, to clean out his threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

•18Indeed then, with many other exhortations also, he was proclaiming good news to the people. •19But when Herod the tetrarch was reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, •20he also added this to [them] all, [that] he shut up John in jail.

Luke 3

•21Now it happened that when all the people were baptized⁴ and Jesus [also] had been baptized⁴ and was praying, the heaven was opened, •22and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a bodily shape like a dove, and a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son;⁵ with you I am well pleased."⁶

Luke 3

4•1And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was being led [about] by means of the Spirit in the wilderness •2[for] forty days, tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days; and when they were ended, he was hungry. •3Now the devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread." •4And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man shall not live on bread alone.'"¹ •5And [the devil] led him up,² and showed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited [earth] in a moment of time. •6And the devil said to him, "I will give you all this authority and their glory; because it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. •7Therefore, if you would worship before me, it will all be yours." •8And Jesus answered by saying to him,³ "It is written,

•14And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news about him went out through the whole region around [there]. •15And he was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

Luke 4

•16And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up to read. •17And there was given to him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

Luke 4

•31And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the sabbath. •32And they were astonished at his teaching, because his word was with authority. •33And in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon; and he cried out with a loud voice, •34"Ah!¹⁰ What have we to do with you, Jesus [you] Nazarene? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." •35And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Hold your tongue,¹¹ and come out of him!" And when the demon had thrown him down in [their] midst, he came out from him, having done him no harm. •36And amazement came on [them] all and they started speaking to one another, saying, "What [is] this word? Because with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out." •37And a report about him was going out into every place in the region around [there].

•38And he arose [and departed] from the synagogue, and entered into the house of Simon. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they made a request of him about her. •39And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and instantly she rose and started serving them.

•40Now when the sun was setting, all those who had [any that were] sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he was laying [his] hands on each one of them and curing them. •41And demons were also coming out from many, crying out and saying, "You are the Son of God!" And he was rebuking [them] and not allowing them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

•42Now when it was day he departed and went to a desolate place. And the crowds were seeking him and came to him, and tried keeping him from going away from them; •43but he said to them, "I have to proclaim the gospel of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; because I was sent for this [purpose]." •44And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.¹²

Luke 5

5•1Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing on him and listening to the word of God, he was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret. •2And he saw two small boats resting¹ beside the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were rinsing [their] nets. •3And getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and started teaching the crowds from the boat. •4And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep and let down ^†your nets for a catch." •5And Simon answered by saying, "Master, we labored throughout the whole night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets."² •6And when they had done this, they enclosed a large multitude of fish; and their nets² started breaking. •7And they signaled to [their] partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they [began] to sink. •8But when Simon Peter saw [it], he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, because I am a sinful man, Lord." •9For amazement had seized him and all those with him at the catch of fish which they had taken; •10and likewise [it had] also [seized] James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Quit being afraid; from now [on] you will be catching men." •11And when they had brought [their] boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

•12And it happened that while he was in one of the cities, behold, [there came] a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on [his] face and implored him, saying, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." •13And he stretched out [his] hand, and touched him, saying, "I am willing; be made clean." And immediately the leprosy departed from him. •14And he commanded him to tell no one; but "go and show yourself to the priest, and offer [the items] for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them."³ •15But so much the more the word about him was going abroad; and large crowds were coming together to hear and to be cured of their sicknesses. •16But he kept withdrawing to desolate [places] and praying.

Luke 5

•17And it happened on one of [those] days, that he was teaching, and there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had⁴ come from every village of Galilee and Judea and [from] Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was in him to be healing.⁵ •18And behold, men [were] bringing on a cot a man who was paralyzed, and they sought to bring him in and lay him before Jesus.⁶ •19And when they did not find by what [way] they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with [his] cot into the midst before Jesus. •20And when he saw their faith he said, "Man, your sins have been forgiven you." •21And the scribes and the Pharisees began reasoning, saying, "Who is this that speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins except God alone?" •22But when Jesus perceived their reasonings,⁷ he answered by saying to them, "Why are ^†you reasoning in ^†your hearts? •23Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins have been forgiven you,' or to say, 'Rise and start walking'? •24But so that ^†you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins"—he said to the one who was paralyzed—"I say to you, rise, and take up your cot and go to your house." •25And instantly he rose before them, and took up [that] on which he was lying, and went to his house, glorifying God. •26And surprise took them all, and they started glorifying God and were filled with fear, saying, "We have seen strange things today."

•27And after this he went out, and saw a tax collector, named Levi, sitting at the tax office; and he said to him, "Start following me." •28And he left everything behind, and rose and started following him.

•29And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who were sitting [at the table] with them. •30And the Pharisees and their scribes started grumbling against his disciples, saying, "Why do ^†you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?" •31And Jesus answered by saying to them, "Those who are healthy have no need for a

Luke 5

doctor, but those who are ill [do]. •32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

•33And they said to him, "John's disciples⁸ fast frequently and make petitions [to God], and so [do] the [disciples] of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink." •34But Jesus said to them, "^†You cannot make the sons of the bridalchamber⁹ fast while the bridegroom is with them, [can ^†you]? •35But the days will come, whenever the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days." •36And he was also telling them a parable: "No one tears a piece from a new cloak and puts [it] on an old cloak; otherwise, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. •37And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the new wine will burst the wineskins and it will be spilled, and the wineskins will be destroyed. •38But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.¹⁰ •39And no one who has drunk old [wine] wishes for new; for he says, 'The old is good.'"¹¹

6•1Now it happened [that] on a sabbath,¹ he was going through the grainfields, and his disciples were picking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing [them] in [their] hands. •2But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are ^†you doing what is not permissible² on the sabbaths?" •3And Jesus answered them by saying, "Have ^†you not read this that David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: •4how he entered into the house of God, and took and ate the bread of the presentation, which it is not permissible [for any] except only the priests to eat, and [also] gave [it] to those with him?"³ •5And he continued saying to them, "The Son of man is lord of the sabbath."⁴

Luke 6

•6Now it happened [that] on another sabbath, he entered into the synagogue and was teaching, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. •7And the scribes and the Pharisees were watching him, [to see] whether he [would] cure [the man] on the sabbath, so that they might find [something of which] to accuse him. •8But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, "Rise and stand [here] in the middle." And he rose and stood [there]. •9And Jesus said to them, "I ask ^†you whether it is permissible on the sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy [it]?" •10And he looked around on them all, and said to him, "Stretch out your hand." And he did [so], and his hand was restored.⁵ •11But they were filled with fury and started discussing with one another what they might do to Jesus.

•12Now it happened [that] in these days he went out onto the mountain to pray; and he continued all night in prayer to God. •13And when it was day, he called his disciples, and chose from them twelve, whom he also named apostles: •14Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, •15and Matthew, and Thomas, and James [the son] of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, •16and Judas [the son] of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

•17And he came down with them and stood on a level place. And a large crowd of his disciples and a large multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon [were there], who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. •18And those who were troubled from unclean spirits were being cured. •19And all the crowd were seeking to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing [them] all.

•20And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and started saying:

"Blessed [are ^†you] poor, because ^†yours is the kingdom of God.

•21"Blessed [are ^†you] who hunger now, because ^†you shall be satisfied.

"Blessed [are ^†you] who weep now, because ^†you shall laugh.

Luke 6

•22"Blessed are ^†you whenever men hate ^†you, and whenever they exclude^{6 †}you and reproach [^†you], and throw out ^†your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of man! •23Rejoice in that day, and leap [for joy], for behold, ^†your reward [is] great in heaven; for in the same [way] their fathers used to do [this] to the prophets.

•24"But woe to ^†you who are rich, because ^†you have ^†your consolation.

•25"Woe to ^†you who are full now, because ^†you shall hunger.

"Woe [to ^†you]⁷ who laugh now, because ^†you shall mourn and weep.

•26"Woe [to ^†you]⁷ whenever all men speak well of ^†you, for in the same [way] their fathers used to do [this] to the false prophets.

•27"But I say to ^†you who hear, Keep loving ^†your enemies, keep doing good to those who hate ^†you, •28keep blessing those who curse ^†you, keep praying for those who abuse ^†you. •29To the one who hits you on the cheek, keep offering the other also; and from the one who takes away your cloak do not withhold [your] tunic either. •30Keep giving to everyone who asks of you; and from the one who takes away your [goods] do not keep asking for [them] back. •31And just as ^†you wish that men would do for ^†you, do for them likewise.

•32"And if ^†you love those who love ^†you, what credit is that to ^†you? For even sinners love those who love them. •33For even if ^†you are doing good to those who do good to ^†you, what credit is that to ^†you? Even sinners do the same. •34And if ^†you lend [to those] from whom ^†you hope to receive, what credit is that to ^†you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. •35But keep loving ^†your enemies, and keep doing good, and keep lending, expecting nothing in return;⁸ and ^†your reward will be great, and ^†you will be sons of the Most High; because he is kind to the unthankful and the evil. •36Keep being compassionate, just as ^†your Father is compassionate.

•37"And do not be judging, and ^†you shall not be judged; and do not be condemning, and ^†you shall not be condemned; keep pardoning, and ^†you will be pardoned; •38keep giving, and it will be

Luke 6

given to ^†you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, they will give into ^†your lap. For the measure with which ^†you measure out will be used to measure out to ^†you in return."

•39Now he also told them a parable: "A blind [man] cannot lead a blind [man, can he]? Will they not both fall into a pit? •40A disciple is not above [his] teacher, but everyone when he has been fully prepared will be like his teacher. •41And why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the beam [of wood] that is in [your] own eye? •42How can you keep saying to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the beam in your [own] eye? [You] hypocrite, first take the beam out of your [own] eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.

•43"For there is no good tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree that produces good fruit; •44for each tree is known by [its] own fruit. For [people] do not collect figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. •45The good man out of the good treasures of [his] heart brings out that which is good, and the evil [man] out of [his] evil [treasure] brings out that which is evil; for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

•46"And why do ^†you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? •47Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show ^†you what he is like: •48he is like a man building a house, who dug deep, and laid the foundation on the rock; and when a flood arose, the river smashed against that house, and could not shake it, because it had been well built.⁹ •49But the one who hears and does not do [them] is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; against which the river smashed, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."

7•1After he had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people he entered into Capernaum. •2Now a certain slave of a centurion, who was dear¹ to him, was ill and about to die.

Luke 7

•3And when [the centurion] heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and save his slave. •4And when they came to Jesus, they started appealing to him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy [to have] you grant this for him, •5for he loves our nation, and he built us [our] synagogue." •6And Jesus started going with them. And when he was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends [to him], saying to him, "Lord, quit bothering [yourself], for I am not fit to have you come under my roof; •7therefore I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant² be healed.³ •8For I also am a man set under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does [it]." •9Now when Jesus heard these [words] he marveled at him, and turned and said to the crowd that followed him, "I say to ^†you, not even in Israel [have] I found so great a faith." •10And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave healthy.

•11And it happened that soon afterward⁴ he went to a city called Nain, and his disciples⁵ and a large crowd were going with him. •12Now as he came near the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only⁶ son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a considerable crowd from the city was with her. •13And when the Lord saw her, he had pity on her and said to her, "Quit weeping." •14And he came and touched the [open] coffin, and those carrying [it] stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." •15And the dead [man] sat up, and began speaking. And he gave him to his mother. •16And fear took hold of [them] all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!" •17And this report about him went out through the whole of Judea and all the region around [there].

Luke 7

•18The disciples of John told him about all these things. •19And John called to [him] a certain two of his disciples, and sent [them] to the Lord,⁷ saying, "Are you the Coming One, or should we be looking for another?"⁸ •20And when the men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, 'Are you the Coming One, or should we be looking for another?'"⁸ •21In that hour he cured many of diseases and illnesses and evil spirits, and to many [that were] blind he gave [the ability] to see. •22And he answered by saying to them, "Go and tell John what ^†you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the crippled walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have the gospel proclaimed to them. •23And blessed is [the one] who is not ensnared [in sin] by [rejecting] me."

•24Now when the messengers of John had gone, he began speaking to the crowds about John: "What did ^†you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? •25But what did ^†you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? Behold, those who are [dressed] in fine clothing and live in luxury are in kings' [courts]. •26But what did ^†you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to ^†you, and more than a prophet. •27This is [the one] about whom it is written,

•31"To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like? •32They are like children, sitting in a marketplace and calling to one another, who say,

Luke 7

•36Now one of the Pharisees was requesting him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat [at the table]. •37And behold, when a woman in the city, who was a sinner, found out that he was sitting [at the table] in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster flask of ointmen t, •38and standing behind [him] at his feet, weeping, she began showering his feet with [her] tears, and started wiping [them] with the hair of her head, and kissing his feet, and anointing [them] with the ointment. •39But when the Pharisee who had invited him saw [this], he spoke to himself, saying, "If this [man] were a prophet,¹³ he would have known who and what sort of woman [this is] who is touching him, because she is a sinner." •40And Jesus responded by saying to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he replied, "Say on, Teacher!" •41A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii,¹⁴ and the other fifty. •42Since they did not have [enough] to pay [him] back, he forgave [them] both. Therefore, which of them will love him more?" •43Simon answered by saying, "I suppose [the one] to whom he forgave more." And he said to him, "You have judged rightly." •44And turning toward the woman he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered into your house, you gave me no water for [my] feet, but she has showered my feet with [her] tears and wiped [them] with her hair. •45You gave me no kiss, but from [the time] I came in she has not ceased kissing my feet. •46You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. •47Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, because she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little." •48And he said to her, "Your sins have been forgiven." •49And those who were sitting [at the table] with [him] began

Luke 7

saying to¹⁵ themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" •50And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

8•1And it happened soon afterward that he started going through cities and villages, preaching and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom of God. And the twelve [were] with him, •2and [also] some other women who had been cured of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, •3and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's foreman, and Susanna, and many others, who were providing¹ for them² out of their belongings.

•4And when a large crowd came together and [people] from every city came to him, he said in a parable: •5"A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he was sowing, some [seed] fell beside the road, and was trodden underfoot, and the birds of the sky devoured it. •6And other [seed] fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. •7And other [seed] fell in the middle of thorns; and the thorns grew up with [it] and choked it. •8And other [seed] fell into good soil and grew up, and produced a hundredfold of fruit." As he was saying these things, he kept clling out, "The one who has ears to hear, let him hear."

•9Now his disciples started asking him what this parable might mean. •10And he said, "To ^†you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God; but to the rest [they are] in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not comprehend.

•11"Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God. •12And the ones beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved. •13And the ones on the rock [are those] who, whenever they hear,

Luke 8

accept the word with joy; and [yet] these have no root—they believe for a while and in a time of temptation fall away. •14And [as for] that which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who hear, and [yet] as they go [on their way] they are choked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life, and do not bear [fruit] to maturity. •15And [as for] that in the good soil, these are those who, hearing the word, hold [it] fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit in endurance.

•16"And no one after lighting a lamp covers it with a vessel, or puts [it] underneath a cot, but puts [it] on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. •17For nothing is secret that will not become apparent, nor [anything] hidden that shall not be known and come into the open. •18Therefore, look out [as to] how ^†you hear; for whoever has, [more] will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him."

•19And [his] mother and his brothers came to him, and they could not reach him because of the crowd. •20And he was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see you." •21But he answered by saying to them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do [it]."

•22Now it happened one day that he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, "Let us go over to the other side of the lake." And they launched [the boat], •23and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling [with water], and were in danger. •24And they came and woke him up, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" And being awakened, he rebuked the wind and the waves of water; and they ceased, and there was a calm. •25And he said to them, "Where [is] ^†your faith?" And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, "Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?"

Luke 8

•26¹And they sailed down to the country of the Gerasenes,³ which is on the other side [of the lake] from Galilee. •27Now when he had come out onto the land, a certain man from the city who had demons met [him]; and for a considerable [period] of time he had worn no clothes,⁴ and he was not living in a house but in the tombs. •28And when he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore you, do not torment me." •29For he was commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept bound with chains and shackles and guarded, and [yet] breaking the bonds, he kept being driven by the demon into the wilderness.) •30And Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; because many demons had entered into him. •31And they started appealing to him that he would not command them to depart into the abyss. •32Now a herd of a considerable [number] of pigs was feeding there on the mountain; and [the demons] appealed to him that he would give them permission to enter into these. And he gave them permission. •33And the demons came out from the man and entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

•34But when those who fed [them] saw what had happened, they fled, and told [it] in the city and in the country. •35Now [people] came out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and sane; and they were afraid. •36And those who had seen [it] told them how the demon-possessed [man] had been made well.⁵ •37And all the multitude of the region around that of the Gerasenes³ asked him to depart from them; because they were seized with great fear; and he got into a boat and returned. •38Now the man from whom the demons had gone started imploring him that he might be with him; but he sent him away, saying, •39"Return to your home, and start relating how much God did for you." And he went away, preaching throughout the whole city how much Jesus did for him.

Luke 8

•40Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. •41And there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he started appealing to him to come to his house, •42because he had an only⁶ daughter, about twelve years [old], and she was dying.

Now as he was going, the crowds were almost crushing him. •43And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years [and] who had spent [her] whole living on doctors⁷ and could not be cured by anyone •44came up behind [him], and touched the tassel of⁸ his cloak; and instantly her flow of blood stopped. •45And Jesus said, "Who [was] the one that touched me?" And when all denied [it], Peter⁹ said, "Master, the crowds are hemming you in and pressing against [you]!"¹⁰ •46But Jesus said, "Someone touched me; for I perceived that power had gone out from me." •47Now when the woman saw that she did not escape notice, she came trembling, and falling down before him told in the presence of all the people for what reason she had touched him, and how she had been healed instantly. •48And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well,⁵ go in peace."

•49While he was still speaking, someone from the synagogue ruler's [house] came* and said, "Your daughter has died; quit bothering the Teacher any longer." •50But when Jesus heard [this], he responded to him, "Quit being afraid; only believe, and she will be made well."⁵ •51Now when he came to the house, he did not let anyone enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the girl. •52And all were weeping and mourning for her; but he said, "Quit weeping; for she is not dead but sleeping." •53And they started laughing at him, knowing that she was dead. •54But¹¹ taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Girl, arise." •55And her spirit returned, and she got up instantly; and he ordered that [something] should be given her to eat. •56And her parents were astounded, but he commanded them to tell no one what had happened.

Luke 9

9•1And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, •2and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.¹ •3And he said to them, "Take nothing for [^†your] journey, neither staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor silver; nor should ^†you have two tunics apiece. •4And into whatever house ^†you enter, stay there, and from there depart. •5And as many as do not receive ^†you, when ^†you depart from that city shake off the dust from ^†your feet for a testimony against them." •6And they departed and started going through the villages, proclaiming the gospel and curing [people] everywhere.

•7Now Herod the tetrarch heard [about] all that was happening, and he was puzzled, because it was being said by some that John had been raised from the dead, •8and by some that Elijah had appeared, and [by] others that a certain prophet from ancient [times] had risen. •9But Herod said, "John I beheaded; but who is this about whom I hear such things?" And he was seeking to see him.

•10And when the apostles had returned, they related to him what they had done. And he took them and withdrew privately to² a city called Bethsaida. •11But when the crowds knew [about it], they followed him; and he welcomed them and started speaking to them about the kingdom of God, and healing those who had need of curing. •12Now the day began declining; and the twelve came and said to him, "Send the crowd away, so that they may go into the villages and country round about, and lodge and find provisions; because we are here in a desolate place." •13But he said to them, "^†You give them [something] to eat." And they said, "We do not have more than five loaves and two fish—unless we should go and buy food for all these people." •14For there were about five thousand [just counting] men. And he said to his disciples, "Make them sit down in groups [of] about fifty apiece." •15And they did so, and started making them all sit down. •16Now he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke them, and started

Luke 9

giving [them] to the disciples to set before the crowd. •17And all ate and were satisfied. And there was taken up twelve baskets of broken pieces that were left over to them.

•18And it happened that as he was praying alone the disciples were with him; and he questioned them, saying, "Who do the crowds say that I am?" •19And they answered by saying, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others, that a certain prophet from ancient [times] has risen." •20And he said to them, "But who do ^†you say that I am?" And Peter answered by saying, "The Christ of God." •21But he warned and commanded them to tell this to no one, •22saying, "The Son of man has to suffer many things, and be rejected by³ the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised."

•23And he started saying to all, "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily⁴ and keep following me. •24For whoever wishes to save his life⁵ will lose it; and whoever loses his life⁵ for my sake, he will save it. •25For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world but loses or forfeits himself? •26For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words,⁶ of him will the Son of man be ashamed whenever he comes in his glory and [the glory] of the Father and of the holy angels. •27But I say to ^†you truly, there are some of those standing here who shall not taste death until [after] they see the kingdom of God."

•28Now it happened that about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up onto the mountain to pray. •29And as he was praying, the appearance of his face became different, and his clothing [became] dazzling white. •30And behold, two men were talking to him, who were Moses and Elijah, •31who appeared in glory and started speaking of his

departure, which he was going to accomplish at Jerusalem. •32Now Peter and those [who were] with him were heavy with sleep, but since they stayed awake,⁷ they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. •33And it happened [that] as the men⁸ were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is a good [thing] for us to be here. Indeed, we should make three shelters,⁹ one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah"—not knowing what he said. •34But while he was saying these things, a cloud came and started overshadowing them; and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud. •35And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, [my] Chosen;¹⁰ be listening to him!" •36And when the voice had gone, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.

•37Now it happened that on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. •38And behold, a man from the crowd cried [aloud], saying, "Teacher, I implore you to look at my son, because he is my only¹¹ [child]; •39and behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; it convulses him with foam [coming from his mouth], and bruises him, and scarcely departs from him. •40And I implored your disciples to cast it out, and they could not." •41And Jesus answered by saying, "O faithless and perverted generation, how long shall I be with ^†you and put up with ^†you? Bring your son here." •42Now while he was still coming, the demon knocked him down and convulsed [him]. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. •43And all were astonished at the majesty of God.

But while they were all marveling at all the things which he was doing, he said to his disciples, •44"Let these words sink into ^†your ears; for the Son of man is going to be delivered into

Luke 9

the hands of men." •45But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, so that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

•46Now an argument arose among them as to who among them might be the greatest. •47But knowing the thought of their heart, Jesus took a child and stood him by his side, •48and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me; for the one who is least among ^†you—he is great."

•49And John answered by saying, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried forbidding him, because he does not follow with us." •50But Jesus said to him, "Do not be forbidding [him]; for he who is not against ^†you¹² is for ^†you.¹²"

•51Now it happened that when the days were approaching for him to be received up, he set [his] face to go to Jerusalem. •52And he sent messengers before him.¹³ And they went and entered into a village of the Samaritans, so as to make ready for him; •53but they did not receive him, because he¹³ was going to Jerusalem. •54And when [his] disciples James and John saw [this], they said, "Lord, do you wish us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?"¹⁴ •55But he turned and rebuked them.¹⁵ •56And they went on to another village.

•57And as they were going along the road, someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." •58And Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes, and the birds of the sky [have] nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay [his] head." •59And he said to another, "Start following me." But

Luke 9

he said, "Lord,¹⁶ let me first go to bury my father." •60But he said to him, "Leave the dead to bury their [own] dead; but you go and start publicizing the kingdom of God." •61And another also said, "I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say good-bye to those at my home." •62But Jesus said to him, "No one who puts [his] hand to the plow and keeps looking back¹⁷ is fit for the kingdom of God."

10•1Now after this the Lord appointed seventy-two¹ others, and sent them out [two] by two before him² into every city and place where he himself was about to come. •2And he was saying to them, "Indeed, the harvest [is] plentiful, but the workers [are] few. Therefore implore the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest. •3Go your way; behold, I am sending ^†you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. •4Carry no purse, no bag, no shoes; and greet no one on the way. •5And into whatever house ^†you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house!' •6And if a son of peace is there, ^†your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to ^†you. •7And keep staying in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the worker [is] worthy of his wages; do not keep moving from house to house. •8And into whatever city ^†you enter and they receive ^†you, eat what is set before ^†you. •9And be curing the sick in it and saying to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to ^†you.' •10But into whatever city ^†you enter and they do not receive ^†you, go out into its streets and say, •11'Even the dust of ^†your city that clings to us, on [our] feet, we wipe off against ^†you; however, know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.' •12I say to ^†you that it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city.

•13"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! Because if the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

Luke 10

•14However, it will be more tolerable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for ^†you. •15And you, Capernaum, you will not be exalted to heaven, [will you]? You shall be brought down³ to Hades.

•16"The one who hears ^†you hears me, and the one who rejects ^†you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects the One who sent me."

•17And the seventy-two¹ returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!" •18And he said to them, "I was watching Satan fall like lightning from heaven. •19Behold, I have given ^†you authority to tread upon snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt ^†you. •20However, do not be rejoicing in this, that the spirits are subject to ^†you; but be rejoicing that ^†your names are written in heaven."

•21In the same hour he was overjoyed in the Holy⁴ Spirit and said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to infants; yes, Father, because so it was pleasing in your sight. •22All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and [the one] to whom the Son may want to reveal [him]."

•23And turning to the disciples he said privately, "Blessed [are] the eyes that see the things which ^†you see! •24For I say to ^†you that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which ^†you see, and did not see [them], and to hear the things which ^†you hear, and did not hear [them]."

•25And behold, a certain lawyer stood up to test him by saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" •26And he said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read [it]?" •27And he answered by saying, "You shall love the Lord your God with⁵ all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind;⁶ and your neighbor as yourself."⁷

Luke 10

•28And he said to him, "You have answered right; keep doing this, and you will live."

•29But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" •30Jesus replied by saying, "A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among bandits, who also stripped him and inflicted blows on [him], and departed, leaving [him] half dead. •31Now by coincidence a certain priest was going down on that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. •32And likewise when a Levite who also happened [along] came upon the place and saw [him], he passed by on the other side. •33But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came upon him; and when he saw [him], he had pity [on him], •34and went to [him] and bound up his wounds, pouring on olive oil and wine; and he set him on [his] own animal and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. •35And on the next day he took out two denarii⁸ and gave [them] to the innkeeper, and said, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you as I am coming back.' •36Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the one who fell among the bandits?" •37And he said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and you keep doing likewise."

•38Now as they were going [on their way], he entered into a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha received him [as a guest].⁹ •39And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at the Lord's¹⁰ feet and was listening to his word. •40But Martha was being distracted with much serving; and she came up to [him] and said, "Lord, does it not matter to you that my sister has left me to be serving alone? Tell her then that she should help me." •41But the Lord¹¹ answered by saying to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and disturbed about many things; •42but [only] one thing is needful.¹² For Mary¹³ has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her."

Luke 11

11•1And it happened [that] he was praying in a certain place, [and] when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples." •2And he said to them, "Whenever ^†you pray, say:

"Father,¹ may your name be kept holy.² May your kingdom come.³ •3Keep giving us every day our daily bread.⁴ •4And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation."⁵

•5And he said to them, "Which of ^†you has a friend and will go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves, •6since a friend of mine has arrived from a journey to [visit] me, and I do not have [anything] to set before him'; •7and he will answer from within by saying, 'Quit giving me a hard time; the door has already been shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up to give you [anything]'? •8I say to ^†you, even if he will not get up and give him [anything] because he is his friend, yet because of his impertinence⁶ he will rise and give him as much as he needs. •9And I say to ^†you, keep asking, and it will be given to ^†you; keep seeking, and ^†you will find; keep knocking, and it will be opened to ^†you. •10For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. •11Now [if] a son asks for a fish from any father among ^†you, will he indeed instead of a fish give him a snake? •12Or indeed, [if] he asks for an egg, will he give him a scorpion?⁷ •13If ^†you then, who are evil, know [how] to give good gifts to ^†your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit⁸ to those who ask him!"

Luke 11

•14And he was casting out a demon, and it was mute. Now it happened [that] when the demon had gone out, the mute [person] spoke, and the people marveled. •15But some of them said, "He casts out the demons by Beelzebul,⁹ the prince of the demons"; •16and others, to test [him], started seeking from him a sign from heaven. •17But knowing their thoughts, he said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is made desolate, and household [divided] against household falls. •18Now if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? Because ^†you say that I am casting out demons by Beelzebul.⁹ •19But if I am casting out the demons by Beelzebul,⁹ by whom do ^†your sons cast [them] out? Therefore they shall be ^†your judges. •20But if I am casting out the demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon ^†you. •21Whenever a strong [man], fully armed, guards his [own] mansion, his belongings are at peace; •22but when [someone] stronger than he comes on [him] and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he had trusted, and distributes his spoils. •23The one who is not with me is against me, and the one who does not gather with me scatters.¹⁰

•24"Whenever the unclean spirit has gone out from a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest; and not finding [any], then¹¹ it says, 'I will return to my house from where I came.' •25And when it comes, it finds [it]¹² swept and decorated. •26Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil [than] itself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last [state] of that man becomes worse [than] the first."

•27Now it happened [that] as he was saying these things, a certain woman from the crowd raised [her] voice and said to him, "Blessed [is] the womb that carried you, and the breasts at which you nursed!" •28But he said, "Blessed rather [are] those who hear the word of God and kept [it]!"

Luke 11

•29Now when the crowds were gathering even more, he began saying, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.¹³ •30For just as Jonah became a sign to the [people] of Nineveh, so will the Son of man also be to this generation. •31The queen of the South will be raised at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, [something] greater [than] Solomon [is] here. •32The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, [something] greater [than] Jonah [is] here.

•33"No one after lighting a lamp puts [it] in a cellar nor under a peck-measure,¹⁴ but on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. •34Your eye is the lamp of the body; whenever your eye is generous,¹⁵ your whole body is also full of light; but when it is grudging,¹⁶ your body [is] also full of darkness. •35Therefore look out lest the light in you is darkness. •36If then your whole body [is] full of light, not having any part dark, it will be wholly full of light, as when a lamp with [its] rays gives you light."

•37Now as he spoke, a Pharisee asked* him to dine with him; and he went in and sat [at the table]. •38And when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that he first was not immersed before dinner. •39And the Lord said to him, "Now ^†you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but the inside of ^†you is full of swindling and wickedness. •40Senseless [people]! Did not the One who made the outside make the inside also? •41But give as charity the things which are within; and behold, all things are clean for ^†you.

•42"But woe to ^†you Pharisees! Because ^†you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and [yet] disregard justice and the love of God; but these [^†you] had to do, without neglecting those

Luke 11

[others].¹⁷ •43Woe to ^†you Pharisees! Because ^†you love the seat of honor in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. •44Woe to ^†you!¹⁸ Because ^†you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over [them] do not know [it]."

•45And one of the lawyers answered* by saying to him, "Teacher, in saying this you are insulting us also." •46And he said, "Woe to ^†you lawyers also! Because ^†you load men down with loads that are hard to carry, and ^†you ^†yourselves do not touch the loads with one of ^†your fingers. •47Woe to ^†you! Because ^†you build the tombs of the prophets and ^†your fathers killed them. •48So ^†you are witnesses and consent to the works of ^†your fathers; bacause they killed them, and ^†you build [their tombs].¹⁹ •49For this [reason] also the Wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and apostles, and [some] of them they will kill and persecute,' •50so that the blood of all the prophets that has been shed from the foundation of the world may be required from this generation, •51from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the house [of God]. Yes, I say to ^†you, it shall be required from this generation. •52Woe to ^†you lawyers! Because ^†you have taken away the key of knowledge; ^†you did not enter ^†yourselves, and ^†you hindered those who were entering."

•53And as he went out from there,²⁰ the scribes and the Pharisees began having it in [for him] terribly and interrogating him about many things, •54lying in wait for him, to catch some [mistake] from his mouth.²¹

12•1In the meantime, when ten thousands of the crowd had gathered together so much that they were treading on one another, he began saying to his disciples first, "^†You must beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. •2Now nothing has been covered up that will not be revealed, or secret that will not be known. •3Therefore whatever ^†you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what ^†you have spoken in [someone's] ear in inner rooms will be preached on the housetops. •4And I say to ^†you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. •5But I will warn ^†you whom ^†you should fear: fear the One who, after he has killed, has authority to throw into hell;¹ yes, I say to ^†you, fear him! •6Are

Luke 12

not five sparrows sold for two nickels?² And not one of them has been forgotten before God. •7But even the hairs of ^†your head have all been numbered. Quit being afraid; ^†you are of more value than many sparrows. •8"And I say to ^†you, everyone who should confess me before men, the Son of man will also confess him before the angels of God; •9but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.

•10"And everyone who shall speak a word against the Son of man, it will be forgiven him; but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

•11"But whenever they bring ^†you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not worry [about] how or what^{3 †}you should answer or what ^†you should say; •12for the Holy Spirit will teach ^†you in the [very] same hour what ^†you have to say."

•13And someone from the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." •14But he said to him, "Man, who appointed me a judge or divider⁴ over ^†you?" •15And he said to them, "Take heed, and keep guarding ^†yourselves from all greed, because a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his belongings." •16And he told a parable to them, saying, "The land of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully; •17and he started reasoning within himself, 'What shall I do, because I have nowhere to store my crops?' •18And he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all [my] wheat and my goods. •19And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.' •20But God said to him, 'Senseless [man]! This night they are demanding your soul from you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' •21Like this [is] the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God."⁵

Luke 12

•22And he said to his disciples, "Therefore I say to ^†you, do not be worrying [about ^†your] life,⁶ what ^†you shall eat, nor [about ^†your] body, what ^†you shall put on. •23For life⁶ is more [than] food, and the body [more than] clothing. •24Consider the ravens: [^†you see] that they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storeroom nor barn, and [yet] God feeds them. Of how much more value are ^†you than the birds! •25And which of ^†you by worrying can add a minute⁷ to his life-span?⁸ •26If then ^†you are not able to [do such] a very little thing, why do ^†you worry about the rest? •27Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither labor nor spin;⁹ yet I say to ^†you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed [himself] like one of these. •28But if God dresses the grass like this, which is alive in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more [will he clothe] ^†you, [O ^†you] of little faith! •29And ^†you must quit seeking what ^†you shall eat and what ^†you shall drink, and quit being anxious. •30For all the pagans of the world are seeking for these things; and ^†your Father knows that ^†you need these. •31Instead, keep seeking his kingdom,¹⁰ and these things shall be added to ^†you. •32Quit being afraid, little flock, because it is ^†your Father's good pleasure to give ^†you the kingdom.

•33"Sell ^†your belongings, and give charity; make ^†yourselves purses that do not become old, an unfailing treasure in the heavens where no thief comes near nor moth destroys. •34For where ^†your treasure is, there will ^†your heart be also.

•35"^†Your waist must be tied [ready for action] and [^†your] lamps burning, •36and ^†you [must be] like men who are waiting for their lord when he returns from the marriage feast, so that when he

comes and knocks they may open [the door] to him immediately. •37Blessed [are] those slaves whom the lord finds watching when he comes; truly, I say to ^†you, he will tie [his belt] and have them sit [at the table], and he will come and serve them. •38And if he comes in the second [watch], or in the third watch, and finds [them] like this, blessed are those [servants]! •39But know this, that if the householder had known in what hour the thief was coming, he¹¹ would not have let his house be broken into. •40^†You be ready also; because the Son of man is coming at an hour when ^†you do not think [he will]."

•41And Peter said, "Lord, are you telling this parable for us or indeed for everyone?" •42And the Lord said, "Who then is the faithful [and] sensible steward, whom [his] lord will appoint over his staff, to give [them their] food-allowance at the [proper] time? •43Blessed [is] that slave whom his lord when he comes will find so doing. •44Truly I say to ^†you that he will appoint him over all his belongings. •45But if that slave says in his heart, 'My lord is taking [his] time [about] coming,' and begins beating the menservants and the maidservants, and eating and drinking and getting drunk, •46the lord of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect [him] and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in two, and assign him a place with the unbelievers. •47And that slave who knew his lord's will, and [yet] did not make ready or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many blows. •48But the one who did not know [it], and did things worthy of blows, shall be beaten [with] few [blows]. Now everyone to whom much is given, of him will much be required; and of him to whom [people] commit much they will ask the more.

•49"I came to throw fire on the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled! •50I have an immersion¹² to be immersed [in]; and how I am distressed until it is accomplished! •51Do ^†you think that I have come to give peace on the earth? No, I say to ^†you, but rather division; •52for from now [on] there will be five in one household divided, three against two and two against three; •53they will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against [her] mother, mother-in-law against [her] daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against [her] mother-in-law."¹³

Luke 12

•54And he also was saying to the crowds, "Whenever ^†you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately ^†you say, 'A rain-storm is coming'; and so it happens. •55And whenever [^†you see] the south wind blowing, ^†you say, 'There will be scorching heat'; and it happens. •56[^†You] hypocrites! ^†You know how to analyze the appearance of earth and sky; but how [is it that] ^†you do not know how to analyze¹⁴ this [present] time?

•57"And indeed why do ^†you not judge for ^†yourselves what is right? •58For as you are going with your opponent before the ruler, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge will deliver you up to the constable, and the constable will throw you into jail. •59I say to you, you shall not come out of there until you have paid back the last cent."¹⁵

13•1Now there were some present at that very time who told him of the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. •2And he¹ answered by saying to them, "Do ^†you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the [other] Galileans, because they have suffered these things? •3I say to ^†you, No; but unless ^†you are repenting ^†you will all likewise perish. •4Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Saloam fell and killed them, do ^†you think that they were worse offenders than all the [other] men who dwelt in Jerusalem? •5I say to ^†you, No; but unless ^†you repent ^†you will all perish in a similar way."

•6And he started telling this parable: "A certain [man] had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came seeking fruit on it and did not find [any]. •7And he said to the vinedresser, 'Behold, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I have not found [any]. Therefore, cut

it down; why should it even use up the ground?' •8And he answered by saying to him, 'Lord, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put manure [on it]. •9And if indeed it produces fruit in the future, [well and good]; but if not, you shall cut it down.'"

•10Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. •11And behold, there was a woman who had had a spirit of sickness for eighteen years; and she was bent over and could not stand absolutely erect. •12And when Jesus saw her, he called [her] and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your sickness." •13And he laid [his] hands on her, and instantly she was made straight, and she praised God. •14But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, started saying to the crowd, "There are six days on which [a person] ought to be working; come on them and be cured, and not on the sabbath day." •15But the Lord answered him and said, "[^†You] hypocrites! Does not each of ^†you on the sabbath untie his ox or [his] donkey from the manger, and lead [it] away to water [it]? •16And was it not necessary for this woman, who is a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan bound for, behold, eighteen years, to be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?" •17And as he was saying these things, all his opponents were being put to shame; and all the crowd was rejoicing at all the glorious things that were done by him.

•18Therefore he continued saying, "What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I liken it? •19It is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and put in his garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the sky nested in its branches."

•20And again he said, "To what shall I liken the kingdom of God? •21It is like leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures² of flour until the whole thing was leavened."

Luke 13

•22And he was going through towns and villages, teaching, and making [his] way toward Jerusalem. •23And someone said to him, "Lord, [will] those who are saved [be] few?" And he said to them, •24"Keep struggling to enter through the narrow door; because many, I say to ^†you, will seek to enter and will not be able. •25Whenever the householder has once risen up and shut the door, then ^†you will begin standing outside and knocking at the door, saying, 'Lord, open to us.' And he will answer by saying to ^†you, 'I do not know ^†you [or] where ^†you are from.' •26Then ^†you will begin saying, 'We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.' •27And [yet] he will indeed say to ^†you,³ 'I do not know ^†you [or] where ^†you are from; depart from me, all [^†you] workers of unrighteousness!' •28There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth there, whenever ^†you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but ^†you [^†yourselves] thrown outside. •29And [people] will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit [at the table] in the kingdom of God. •30And behold, [some] are last who will be first, and [some] are first who will be last."

•31At the [very] same hour some Pharisees came up, saying to him, "Go away and depart from here, because Herod wishes to kill you." •32And he said to them, "Go and tell that fox, 'Behold, I cast out demons and perform healings today and tomorrow, and the third [day] I accomplish [my goal]. •33However, I have to be going on my way today and tomorrow and the [day] after because it is not possible for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem.' •34[O] Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How many times I wished to gather your children together in the way that a hen [gathers] her young chicks under [her] wings, and ^†you were not willing! •35Behold, ^†your house is left [alone]⁴ to ^†you. And I say to ^†you, ^†you shall not see me until [the time] shall come when^{5 †}you say, 'Blessed [is] the One who comes in the name of the Lord!'"

Luke 14

14•1And it happened that when he went into the house of a certain one of the rulers who belonged to the Pharisees to eat bread on a sabbath, they were watching him. •2And behold, there was a certain man before him who had dropsy. •3And in response Jesus spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it permissible to cure on the sabbath, or not?" •4But they remained quiet. And he took [him] and healed him, and let [him] go. •5And he said to them, "Which of ^†you shall have a son¹ or an ox fall into a well shaft, and will not immediately pull him out on a sabbath day?" •6And they could not reply to this.

•7Now he started telling a parable to those who had been invited, when he noticed how they were choosing the places of honor, saying to them, •8"Whenever you are invited by anyone to a marriage feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest a more honorable [person] than you should have been invited by him; •9and the one who invited [both] you and him will come and say to you, 'Give place to this [person],' and then you will begin with shame to take the least [important] place. •10But whenever you are invited, go and sit in the least [important] place, so that whenever the one who has invited you comes he will say to you, 'Friend, go up higher'; then you will receive glory in the presence of all those who are sitting [at the table] with you. •11Because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

•12Now he was also saying to the one who had invited him, "Whenever you make a dinner or a supper, do not call [in] your friends nor your brothers nor your relatives nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return, and that becomes your repayment. •13But whenever you make a feast, invite the poor, the disabled, the crippled, the blind, •14and you will be blessed, because they do not have [a way] to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just."

•15And when one of those who sat [at the table] with [him] heard these things, he said to him, "Blessed [is] he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!" •16But he said to him, "A certain man

Luke 14

was making a great supper, and invited many; •17and he sent his slave at the supper hour to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; because it is now ready.' •18But they all alike began making excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a farm, and I must go out and see it; I ask you, have me excused.' •19And another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to examine them; I ask you, have me excused.' •20And another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.' •21And the slave came and told his lord these things. Then the householder was angry and said to his slave, 'Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and disabled and blind and crippled.' •22And the slave said, 'Lord, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.' •23And the lord said to the slave, 'Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel [people] to come in, so that my house may be filled. •24For I say to ^†you that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.'"

•25Now large crowds were going with him; and he turned and said to them, •26"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters and, in addition, even his [own] life, he cannot be my disciple. •27Whoever does not carry his [own] cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple. •28For which of ^†you, wishing to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, [to see] whether he has [enough] to complete [it]? •29Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all who observe [it] begin mocking him, •30saying, 'This man began building, and was not able to finish.' •31Or what king, going to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet the one who is coming against him with twenty thousand? •32And if not, while he is still a long way off, he sends a delegation and asks for [terms] of peace. •33So therefore, anyone of ^†you who does not say good-bye to all his belongings cannot be my disciple.

•34"Therefore, salt [is] good; but if indeed the salt should lose its taste, with what will it be seasoned? •35It is fit neither for the land nor for the manure pile; [people] throw it outside. The one who has ears to hear, let him hear."

Luke 15

15•1Now all the tax collectors and the sinners were coming near to him to hear him. •2And both the Pharisees and the scribes started grumbling, saying, "This [man] receives sinners and eats with them."

•3And he told this parable to them, saying: •4"What man of ^†you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not leave behind the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it? •5And when he has found [it], he lays [it] on his shoulders, rejoicing. •6And when he comes home, he calls together [his] friends and [his] neighbors, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep which was lost.' •7I say to ^†you that there will be [more] joy like this in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine [persons] who have no need for repentance.

•8"Or what woman, having ten drachmas,¹ if she loses one drachma, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek carefully until she finds [that coin]? •9And when she has found [it], she calls together [her] friends and neighbors, saying, 'Rejoice with me, because I have found the drachma which I had lost.' •10Just so, I say to ^†you there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents."

•11And he said, "A certain man had two sons; •12and the younger of them said to [his] father, 'Father, give me the part of the property that falls [to me].' And he divided [his] living between them. •13And not many days after [that], the younger son gathered all [he had] and went on a journey into a distant country, and there he squandered his property in wasteful living. •14And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. •15And he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs. •16And he was desiring to eat [his] fill of² the carob pods that the pigs were eating; and no one was giving him [anything]. •17But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have enough bread to spare, but I am perishing here in the famine! •18I will arise and

Luke 15

go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; •19I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants."' •20And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still at a distance his father saw him and had pity, and ran and embraced him³ and kissed him. •21And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'⁴ •22But the father said to his slaves, 'Bring out quickly the best robe, and put [it] on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on [his] feet; •23and bring the fattened calf [and] kill [it], and let us eat and be merry; •24because this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began being merry.

•25"Now his older son was in the field; and as he came and neared the house, he heard music and dancing. •26And he called one of the servants⁵ and started inquiring what these things possibly meant. •27And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back healthy.' •28But he was angry and was not willing to go in. And his father came out and started appealing to him, •29but he answered by saying to [his] father, 'Behold, so many years I have been serving you, and I never transgressed your command; and [yet] you never gave me a kid, that I might be merry with my friends. •30But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!' •31And he said to him, '[My] child, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. •32But it was necessary to be merry and rejoice, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; and he was lost, and is found.'"

16•1Now he was also saying to the disciples, "There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and charges were brought to him that this [man] was wasting his belongings. •2And he called him and said to him, 'What [is] this [that] I hear about you? Give [me] the account of your stewardship, for you can no longer be steward.' •3And the steward said to himself, 'What shall I do, because my lord is taking the stewardship away from me? I am not strong [enough] to dig; I am ashamed to beg. •4I know what I shall do, so that whenever I am put out of the stewardship [people]

Luke 16

may receive me into their houses.' •5And he called for each one of his lord's debtors and started saying to the first, 'How much do you owe my lord?' •6And he said, 'A hundred baths¹ of olive oil.' And he said to him, 'Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.' •7Then he said to another, 'And how much do you owe?' And he said, 'A hundred cors² of wheat.' He said* to him, 'Take your bill, and write eighty.' •8And the lord commended the unrighteous steward because he had acted sensibly; because the sons of this age are more sensible in their [own] generation than the sons of light. •9And I say to ^†you, make friends for ^†yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth,³ so that whenever it fails⁴ they may receive ^†you into the eternal habitations.

•10"The one who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and the one who is unrighteous in a very little is unrighteous also in much. •11Therefore, if ^†you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth,³ who will entrust to ^†you the true [riches]? •12And if ^†you have not been faithful in that which is another's, who will give ^†you that which is ^†your own?⁵ •13No servant can be serving two masters;⁶ for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. ^†You cannot be serving God and wealth."³

•14Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things, and they were ridiculing him. •15And he said to them, "^†You are those who justify ^†yourselves before men, but God knows ^†your hearts; because what is exalted among men [is] an abomination before God.

•16"The law and the prophets [were] until John; since then the gospel of the kingdom of God is being proclaimed, and everyone enters into it violently. •17But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one stroke⁷ of the law to fail.

Luke 16

•18"Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and the one who marries a [woman] divorced from [her] husband commits adultery.

•19"Now there was a certain rich man, and he used to clothe [himself] in purple and fine linen and make merry in a splendid manner every day. •20And a certain poor [man] named Lazarus, who was covered with sores, lay at his gate •21and desired to be fed with what fell from the rich [man's] table; besides [this], the dogs were also coming and licking his sores. •22Now it happened [that] the poor [man] died and he was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. Now the rich [man] also died and was buried; •23and in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw* Abraham at a distance and Lazarus in his bosom. •24And he called out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; because I am suffering painfully in this flame.' •25But Abraham said, '[My] child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are suffering painfully. •26And besides all this, between us and ^†you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who wish to pass from here to ^†you may not be able; nor may [anyone] cross from there to us.' •27And he said, 'Then I ask you, father, that you would send him to my father's house, •28for I have five brothers, that he may warn them, lest they also come to this place of torment.' •29But Abraham said*, 'They have Moses and the prophets; they must hear them.' •30And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if someone should go to them from the dead, they will repent.' •31But he said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.'"

17•1And he said to his disciples, "It is impossible for the snares [to sin] not to come; but woe [to him] through whom they come! •2It would be better for him if a millstone were placed around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should ensnare one of these little ones [in sin]. •3Take care [as] to ^†yourselves; if your brother sins,¹ rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him; •4and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and seven times turns to you, saying, 'I repent,' you shall forgive him."

Luke 17

•5And the apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" •6And the Lord said, "If ^†you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, ^†you would say to this mulberry tree, 'Be rooted up, and be planted in the sea,' and it would obey ^†you.

•7"But which of ^†you, who has a slave plowing or shepherding [a flock], will say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come immediately and sit down [at the table]'? •8Will he not rather say to him, 'Prepare [food] on which I may dine, and tie [your belt] and serve me, until I eat and drink; and after this you shall eat and drink'? •9He does not thank the slave because he did what was commanded, [does he]?² •10So ^†you also, whenever ^†you have done all that is commanded ^†you, say, 'We are useless slaves; we have [only] done what we ought to do.'"

•11And it happened that as he was going to Jerusalem he was passing through the middle of³ Samaria and Galilee. •12And as he entered a certain village, there met [him] ten men who were lepers, who stood far away •13and raised [their] voices, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." •14And when he saw [them] he said to them, "Go and show ^†yourselves to the priests." And it happened [that] as they were going they were cleansed. •15Now one of them, when he saw that he was cured, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice; •16and he fell on [his] face at Jesus'⁴ feet, giving him thanks. And he was a Samaritan. •17But Jesus answered by saying, "Were not ten cleansed? But where [are] the nine? •18Were not [any] found to return and give glory to God except this foreigner?" •19And he said to him, "Rise and go [your way]; your faith has made you well."

•20And being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, he answered them and said, "The kingdom of God is not coming in such a way as to be observed;⁵ •21nor will they say, 'Behold, here [it is]!' or 'There!' for behold, the kingdom of God is in ^†your midst."⁶

Luke 17

•22And he said to the disciples, "The days will come when ^†you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ^†you will not see [it]. •23And they will say to ^†you, 'Behold, there!' or 'Behold, here!' Do not go nor run after [them]. •24For just as the lightning that flashes from one [side] of the sky gives light to the other [side] of the sky, so shall the Son of man be in his day.⁷ •25But first he has to suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. •26And just as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it also be in the days of the Son of man. •27They were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed [them] all. •28Likewise just as it was in the days of Lot—they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building, •29but on the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and sulphur from heaven and destroyed [them] all—•30in [that] same [way] shall it be on the day when the Son of man is revealed. •31On that day, he who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, must not go down to take them away; and likewise the one who is in the field must not turn back. •32Keep remembering Lot's wife. •33Whoever seeks to secure⁸ his life⁹ will lose it, and whoever shall lose [his life] will preserve it. •34I say to ^†you, in that night there will be two [men] on one cot; one will be taken and the other will be left. •35There will be two [women] grinding together; one will be taken but the other will be left."¹⁰ •37And they answered* by saying to him, "Where, Lord?" And he said to them, "Where the body [is], there the eagles¹¹ will also be gathered together."

18•1And he started telling them a parable to the [effect that] they ought always to keep praying and not be losing heart, •2saying, "In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. •3Now there was a widow in that city and she kept coming to him and

saying, 'Give me justice against my adversary.' •4And for a time he was not willing; but afterwards he said to himself, 'Even though I do not fear God nor respect man, •5yet because this widow is giving me a hard time, I will give her justice, so that in the end she will not come and give me a blackeye.'"¹ •6And the Lord said, "Hear what the unrighteous judge says. •7And shall not God grant justice for his chosen ones, who cry to him day and night? And will he delay long over them? •8I say to ^†you that he will grant them justice speedily. However, when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

•9Now he also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and scorned the rest [of the people]: •10"Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. •11The Pharisee stood and started praying these things with himself,² 'God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of mankind: swindlers, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. •12I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' •13But the tax collector, standing at a distance, was not willing to lift up [his] eyes to heaven, but kept beating his chest, saying, 'God, be merciful³ to me, the sinner!' •14I say to ^†you, this [man] went down to his house justified rather than the other; because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

•15Now they were bringing even babies to him so that he might touch them. But when the disciples saw [it], they started rebuking them. •16But Jesus called for them, saying, "Let the children keep coming to me, and quit hindering them; for to such belongs⁴ the kingdom of God. •17Truly, I say to ^†you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter into it."
